The "service engine" light came on in my disco a couple of days ago, I havent had anyone look at it since it runs absolutely fine. The mileage is not a round number, anyone have any idea of what the light could be about????

If is is a 94 or 95, check under the passenger seat (from the back seat) and note the number the diagnostic box is reading. Then go to the tech section and see what the problem is.

I think that it comes on at different mileages for different years, but most of them seem to be set for 52k mi on the odo. The manual says "at approximately 50k". Mine's now at 80k and didn't come on, but I know of another (same year as mine) that didn't come on until 82k, so.... I'm waiting to see....

Like Chuck said, there's a reset box, under the seat for earlier Discos, in the front kickpanel on later ones (still DI, tho'). DII, the check-engine and service-engine lights were merged.

Where is the reset box for the 97 Discos? Mine just came on and the dealer gave me 30 reasons why it could be on and told me I can't get an appointment until May 23 or something like that.

Any help on how to get it off would be great.

I saw a picture SOMEWHERE on the WWW that showed an orange button on a module mounted behind the kick panel (left or right? - idunno) Press the button with a punch or little phillips head or torx driver, (its recessed in the module) and the light is reset.

Anyone out there have actual experience with this??

Raymond,

On your '97, was it the "Service Engine" light, or the "Check Engine" light??

Service Engine, it only comes on because you've hit a certain mileage... reset box is in your passenger kick panel.

Check Engine, something set it off, you need an OBD-II reader to see what the code is, and to cut the light off. You can do it w/ a laptop if you have an OBD-II cable (they run ~$120).

Good luck,

Leslie,

the obd-2 thing works wonders, but i found that a good placement of your left hand on the steering wheel covers Check Engine, Anti-Lock, and Service Engine lights all at once, without obstructing more vital lights and gauges, like oil pressure, temp and fuel level

Leslie,

Where actually is the kick panel on the passenger side? and what does the reset button look like.

The kick-panel is in the passenger footwell. There would be a black box, w/ a sticker on it. Straighten out a paperclip, and push it through the hole under the sticker... what you're doing is, making contact between two wires in there, letting the paperclip act as a jumper.

PS: Peter.... ROTFLMAO....

If you plug it into a OBD-II, the check-engine will cut off once the codes are downloaded.

Leslie, no, it will not unless you check "clear all codes" button.

it is actually cool to watch the sensors outputs in real time. Helps to understand the ECU strategy.
