I am going to service my Warn XD-9000 this weekend. I seem to have a little rust forming which inhibits the motion of the Lever at times. It's 2 years old and probably in need of some new lube. What kind of Grease should I use to service it. I am also thinking of sealing the winch a little better so the river crossing won't be so brutal on it. Any thoughts?

Wheel bearing grease works pretty well - the high temp disc brake variety. I'm sure other stuff does also.....

I'm sure any automotive grease would do but I too use wheel bearing grese. For best water-proofness, if you can call it that, I had best luck with synthetic grease. I also silicone all the housing and drum support pices together and same on the motor side. You still get crap in your winch but it seems to last much longer between maintenance. Mine is an XD9000 also. Oh yeah, do not get any grease inside the drum and/or on the brake, of course. Just leave the brake inside, or if you take it out, make sure you note how the pieces go back together. Like with everything, there is a correct way and a wrong way to put it back to together and they both look almost the same when done.

You may want to consider a Lithium grease, if you use a wheel brg grease use sparingly as too much will not let the winch operate or even free spool.
