Our poodle is dead and stupidwinch wants 435 for a new motor.

Buy something with a driveshaft or at the very least a huge hydraulic pump.

Thats my working theory.

Hey Ron,
Have you looked into having the motor rebuilt?
Should be easy enough and much less than $435.

Any place that rebuilds starters should be able to do it.

Making a bumper for a poodle today. I have my issues with them but they are still much better then your planetary options out there..

Ron how is the Husky any different from anything else you have? You have managed to break everything you have ever touched. Your trucks look like junk probably because they are junk after you got through with them. So it's not the Husky it's you.

Richard, back to the original question....

i really like the husky.

last year in moab, the husky on john lee's milkrtuck took over the job that used to be performed by kyle's RE12000.
winched several trucks, one after another,
and didn't even break out a sweat.

one thing i like about husky over the RE: faster spooling of the cable after you are done doing the job.

"ouch.! but ohhhh so true. LOL"

In this case no. I admit I am hard on things and somewhat unlucky with stuff going bad.

I believe it has an internal short. I had like 2 easy pulls on it then it died. Smoking ground wire and dead. Solinoids checked out ok.

Yes I called stupidwinch. I even talked to the rep at MAR and he checked and made sure everything was hooked up properly (it was). when I called what they said was: You have to pay to ship it both ways no matter what and the motor is 435 plus labor. You could just buy the motor for 435. Maybe they would warantee it but they basically said they would not.

I am not putting any money into it. I considered trying to rebuild it myself but I don't have any instructions. I suppose I could wing it but I have not been in the mood.

If they stood behind their products I would not bash them, I can't understand shit breaking but not without abuse. If anyone from superwinch reads this and whats to do something about it my email is posted.

When I can swing it I will get the maxidrive PTO and a mechanical winch, or a hydraulic winch if the PTO shafts won't fit. Ideally I would like to fit a PTO driven Koenig to the disco. The mounts and size are similar enough that I believe it could fit.

No more electrics for Ron, except the ones I have now.

Now Richard , back to your question. The husky is certainly better when compared to the planet geared winches , BUT , when you compare it to the RE its just not the same . The RE is built much tougher ..... That damn Husky fought me today falling apart and being a pain in the ass...

I checked out the specs on the Ramsey site. The RE12000 is ~135lbs!! That seems heavy to me. Aren't most winches used on trucks around 90-100lbs? Also, they don't make an RE10000 which I saw someone mention. A friend has a 10000lb Warn on his IIa and it's frickin' huge. Is a 12000lb winch really necessary? I've got a Belleview-LAnd Rover factory winch on my IIa. It's the predecessor to the 8274 (Warn bought out Belleview). Anyway, it's never even come close to stalling. Of course a IIa 88 is probably way way lighter than a big ol' Disco. Just thinking out loud.

Niall , have you ever heard someone say "I sure wish I had a smaller winch" ??? The 8 , 10 and RE 12 are all the same physical size so why not pack extra , just incase ? I often wonder why people have an issue with big winches. I wonder if these are the same people that have issue with buying heavy duty axles or upgraded driveline parts... Its a strange thing.... :)

Well, no I haven't. Of course I've never heard anyone say "I sure wish I had another 30 or 40 pounds on my bumper" ;-)
Seriously though, I didn't realise that all three Ramsey RE winches were the same weight. In that case I agree - why not go for a 12k. It's just seems like a big piece of gear compared to what I'm used to seeing on Rovers. Definitely looks the business though. I'll be watching out for one of those. I love the 8274 but they'd be a bit awkward on the front of a Disco.
BTW, I've never met anyone who had an "issue" with buying HD driveline parts, aside from the price. Of course I'm more used to series guys who are usually CB's (read: poor). As a student, upgrades like that are so far out of my budget it's not even funny. If something breaks then sure, try to replace broken bits with better gear, but otherwise, try to run what you brung. Anyway, I'm sure that has been beat to death already.

As I said before, I was just surprised to see people running such big winches. Anyway, since I'll have to do a CB lift, I guess a heavy winch would be a good thing ;-)
