Hi Everybody,

On eBay there's someone selling a CD that supposedly has the repair manuals for '87-'00 Land Rovers, all models, all on a disk. This almost sounds too good to be true.

Does anyone know where you can buy these? How much does it cost? It's currently at 102.00 with about 30 minutes left. I would really only want it for the Disco. Has this been "borrowed" from a dealer? Is it legitimate?

If it's been borrowed from a dealer (RAVE CD) then it has an expiration date on it.

I saw that. I don't know what this guy is shoveling, but the RR Manual I have on CD in PDF takes up over a third of the CD. The Parts manual would take up almost that much again. Doing this for the D90/D110, Disco, NBS Rangie, the ETMs and other stuff he says he has sounds almost too good to be true.

In that case, I'm glad I didn't bid on it. The rule, sounds too good to be true, probably was the case here. I'm a rookie with the Discos, so I definitely want to get a real shop manual. I guess paper format is the safest way to go

Thanks for the reality check.

if the RR manual was in PDF, it would take up a third of a cd, but if all of it was in text with the necessary images in JPG, you could probably fit all of that on a cd. E-mail the seller and ask him about it, it may actually be worth it....If you do buy this, then tell us....

The RAVE CD used by dealers are PDF and include RR, Disco, Defender and DiscoII's and I think Diesels too. I have to look again. But they're all there on one CD. But as I said they have an expiration date.

Yea, please check again. I have a RR Manual on CD (and on the web) so I'm fairly familar with how much room it takes. And Brad, PDF files use JPGs for their on-screen images, and they compress using TIFF and JPG for their storage format. It's doubtful that unless you bring the qualty way down, storing them in anything else would save much room.

The auction has since closed but I'm still looking into at least for curiosity sakes. I wrote him to see if he could send me an example, to see the format.

With the RAVE CD, how does the expiration date work? Does the CD not work after a specific time period? If that's the case, even if it did have an expiration, couldn't you just copy it to another CD or save it to your hard drive?

Is there anyplace that sells these cd's retail, like Atlantic British or some other outfit?

If the CD has an expiriation date, it's likely that it writes the date to some obscure place in the registry. It would then compare that date to what is in the program logic on the CD to see if it should execute or not.

I don't think you can buy a CD from any vendor because LR doesn't release them to the public that way. The one I have was scanned personally into PDF and then the PDF files were written to CD.

Perrone,

I would imagine you could disable autorun from a CD ROM, and once it's done, I don't see how can copying a document from CD ROM to your hard drive and subsequent opening it be time-dependent.

and, of course, you can change the PC's clock.

Changing the PC Clock is viable. Hopefully it doesn't use other tricks like requiring the registry entry to run. I've seen programs do things like that to prevent what we are describing here.

The guy who's selling these CDs finally wrote back and here's what he had to say,

"Hi, thanks for your interest.

These files are not PDF. They are Mitchell On-Demand data files. At this
point you can only view them with the Mitchell program (On the CD, setup is
less than 3 minutes!!)."

Does anybody know what "Mithcell On-Demand" files are? And is it worth me shelling out $65.00??

Answers to your questions...

Mitchell ON-DEMAND is a professional comprehensive repair information database. To buy the program outright costs $5000.00 and you need registration keys to load and support the program.

So, yes it's worth $65.00. Will it work if you buy it from anyone else besides MitchellRepair?

Hmm.

I had a chance to view one of these CDs this evening. It was the one the guy from the UK was selling.

It was the indeed the RAVE cds. They are genuine, and they were pretty good. The one I saw had quite a lot of info. But the workshop manuals were far from complete. I looked at sections where I was familiar with the paper manual and the CD version was lacking.

For the US$15 the guy was asking, it might be worth it, but not if you really want the entire workshop manual. The files were in PDF.

I'm quite sure we are talking about different CDs which is why I specified the ones that were being sold by the gentlemen from the UK. I have not seen the ones for sale on Ebay.

Its a Bootleg copy and the Mitchell Data on LRovers is not much better than the Haynes. The All Data on line subscription is a much better options.

I have the complete Rave CD for Discoveries, Range Rovers, Range Rover Classics, and Defenders. I had a friend at a printing company print out all the 95 Disco pages. I now have an entire shelf full of binders that total more than 2,000 pages just covering my '95 Disco. It is very very complete. If a dealership has more information than this, I can't imagine what it would be. My local mechanic loves it. He can't believe I got my hands on it.

(Why do I feel like I'm going to get a lot of email about this?)

Here is what is on the disk.

Yep,

That looks like the list of what was on the RAVE CD that I saw. I looked at the Workshop Manual and ETM portions since I have those paper manuals for the RRC. They have very different info. For instance the RAVE CD has a section on axles. Each axle section was 3 pages long. In the shop manual, the axles section is at least 8 pages. The results were similar for the cooling section. It just seemed that the RAVE CD covered only the most basic of repairs, or the repairs that a dealership would perform. Anything that's not on the RAVE CD is farmed out I guess or they say "We have to replace that part", since they don't have the manual pages to fix it.

Hell, I don't know. Who can tell why dealers suck.

Not sure why dealers suck if they are using the same manuals that we can get our hands on.

Albeit, there are some really good LR dealer mechanics, it's just that the dealers themselves are crooks.

I guess for the manuals, genuine LR workshop manual is the way to go. I mean, they did build the truck, so they should know its ins and outs.

The acutal workshop manual is awesome. Worth every dime the charge for it. I just wish it was more complete. But combine it with the parts manual and the Electronic Troubleshooting Manual, and you've got a formidible amount of knowledge at your fingertips. I've finally got all 3 for my truck and its a real comfort when things break.

Perone,

I agree use sources like AllData or the Haynes it adds a bit more of the hands on and less of a sterile approach like is outlined by the LR manuals. I have all 3 also and in dealing with LR to much information is a good thing.

Hi,
there was a russian site offering this CD in a illegal way, and curious distribution method. I found some of its .pdf files from manuals for Defender TD5 in a german LR site, to be downloaded.
Unfortunatelly i still dont found Data for my need (´97 Disco TDI300).
Since i live in Argentina (No books available at reasonable costs, no internet purchase because international credit cards are blocked) i´m interested to found them.
Does anybody know if there is any site?
Excuse me for my spelling and for my daring question.
Greetings
