Hi, I just wanted to know if the tires need to be rotated for discovery II. The owners manual does not mention anything. Also any ideas as to where people have bought cheap LR original parts. You help is much appreciated. Thanks for your time. |

For parts, I recommend Nathan Crabtree at http://www.discountrovers.com. For some parts, I just don't think that the savings + shipping is worth mail order, especially if you NEED the part immediately. I am interested in the tire rotation question too. |

I have a 99 D2 and was told not to rotate by the trusty dealershit. I followed their advice and wish now that I hadn't. My fronts wore out much faster and if air pressures are kept in check, I see no reason not to rotate. I would only rotate front to back, back to front, not corner to corner, however. Remember, tire pressure differentials are key. |

I was recently told by the dealer during my 30,000 mile service that the brakes are worn out and are under <25% of the recommended. Now I have to get the brakes done. He quoted me the price of $1700.00 which includes all four rotors and brake pads. What I find amazing is that how can the front and the back wearout so evenly. I have owned many cars and this is the first time I am seeing that. Also he told me that the front tires have uneven wear. So I should replace the tires, I have 18 inch tires. When I had origianlly complained to the dealer last year inclding landrover rep, they told me that the wear is normal for disco II. And these cars donot have wheel alignment issues and no tire rotation sould be done. Now he tells me that wheel alighment is out %&*#. ALso another intersting thing that I found is that one dealer was charging me $649.99 for 30,000 mile scheduled service, while the other charged me only $424.00. so check for prices before getting the service done. Also when I complained he told me that the "CENTER" pricing is different than the dealer pricing, all a bunch of crab when no new service or any other value is added. I found and interesting site for parts, with no shipping charges. www.thepartsbin.com |

You are getting the supreme royal screwing! Expedition Exchange has a great tutorial on changing pads. First time i ever did it took me 1 hour - maybe a little extra time if you need to go buy a tool you realize you didn't have. I don't know why you would have to change the rotors when the mileage is so low - unless the pad wear caused it. I didn't change mine @ 23K. The rotors I don't know how to change but talked to a tech this weekend and he said it was easy. Also - $629 for the 30K sounds whacked as well. I live in Atlanta and the Buckhead dealership-which is in a expensive part of town-only charges around $400. I would not go back to that dealer. |

If you don't want to do it yourself, get the parts and a local mechanic can do it for you. Total cost is rotors 4X80$ or so, pads less than $100 per set, labout about 3 hours. That's what I do. Also make sure they didn't lie to you about the rotors, 30K is not far...get someone you trust to measure those things. Michel |

Tire rotations: I have recently purchased a set of new tires for my '95 Disco. While discussing my purchase intentions and the type of driving I do, the tire guy made it very clear to me that if I intended to get the mileage I expected that I should rotate my tires at every oil change. In speaking with any of a number of others (Rover owners and others-but off-roaders), I learned that most of them also do this at every oil change. I rotate my tires at every oil change. but also don't have someone tell you they can turn your rotors either. from what i have been told the tolerances are pretty low, since they are thin to start out with. my rears are original with 68K on them. (but will be changed out by the spring) fronts were done once. rotors and pads from nathan will set you back just under $300 most likely + shipping. basic shop at $50/hour or so and you are still under $500 for parts and labor. with the money left over you can buy us shots!!

Ihave a '99 Series 2 and rotate my tires every other oil change, so every 6k will do it. Got 65,000 out of original set of Michelins and could have gone further! Also, had front pads replaced at 50k - cost around $200. |

Ummm, Never rotated my tires, got 90K out of the michelins, because I bent a track rod and drove him with it. Got 80K out the BFG, again no rotation, even wear. Michel |

Hi Guys! Thanks for writing, I do feel that I was being screwed, thats why I decided to post the message on this bulletin board. I have deicided to buy the parts myself and I am going to get the brakes done at a local mechanic, he fixes BMW and BENZ's. He has agreed to do the job for $200.00 Plus I also have to get the alignment done $79.00 Balancing $24.00(all four) and the tire rotation done free. Since he will be working on the brakes anyway. I want to install a brush bar and a roof rack later. Any ideas on how to go about it. again "THANKS" so much for the info, I really feel better. BTW oil changes @ 3000 or 7500? as recommended. I will take some extra shots tonight for everyone's share :-) |

i change the oil every 3-4K. depending on how it looks. as far as aftermarket goodies. what will you be using the rack and brushgard for? rack for just vacationing or hauling heavy loads, gear, etc.??? and as far the as brushgard goes i think most folks here will steer you away from them unless you are just looking for something to mount lights on. if you are going to spend the $ on one you may as well upgrade your bumper while you are at it. do you plan to do any off roading? sounds like you are on the road to being dealer free and have plenty of $ left over for booze and trips to vegas!!

Hi Garrett, Rack is meant for hauling the family stuff. I have a seven seater and when all seats are in use no room left to put luggage. For the brush bar, I have twice had #$%&*** people back into me while I was waiting once on my way to the labor room, while my wife was still sitting in the car in labor pains and once in the parking lot. It can cause extensive damage. Hopefully having a brush bar will prevent it. A brush bar is safer hopefully, when you have to drive on the wonderful CA highways and local :-) Yes, indeed I am on my way to dealer free living..... |

well for just hauling family stuff the Yakima Load Warrior seems to work well for many. you can buy extensions for them too if you need more space up top. i have a wilderness rack by garvin. it is more suited for heavy gear and off roading. very heavy and not very easy to take off and on. weighs over 100 lbs. sure Thule makes some good ones as well. you will see people on where selling their used brushgards from time to time as they are upgrading to new bumpers. check out www.rackattack.com for rack systems or just listen to what people have done here. i know there are a few with the Yakima setup. good luck. |
