Maybe just a coincidence, but after visiting the dealer for my 30K mile service and the recall items, I noticed a mildew smell a few days later. Just checked under the front passenger mat and it is soaked. Any ideas on the cause?

I am not sure about the Disco II's but, in my Series I there was a water leak in the wind screen. It was in the top corner, water ran down the inside of the front pillar, behind the interior trim. Past the dash, down the side of the foot well and onto the floor. In my case it was caused by a bad wind screen install after the original was broken. But even after a month of prying up the carpet, and more importantly, the rubber pad under the carpet, it is still slightly wet - take care of it now! Check for the leak by drying the carpet, then spraying the outside and then checking the carpet for wetness, then get to opening up the interior trim and isolating from whence it came.

make sure your heater core isn't leaking. I had that problem when i had my Isuzu Trooper. I smelled that caracteristic coolant mildewy smell (and yes the mat was soaked)

It also may be a stopped up condensate line from your AC. If it hasn't been warm enough for AC...remember the compressor comes on when you run your defroster!!

Run your hand across the carpet, if your fingers feel "slick", then its not just water but antifreeze and you just need a heatercore. I bought one from Nathan for good price, took the dash apart and got it in but couldnt get the darn feed and return lines to connect. They dont screw in like most, they push in and have a clamp over. Stupid. I decided the design was gay and to go without heat. Will buy some large 12v heater and if that doesnt work will get an old VW gas heater, better for camping anywho. Not sure what the dealer charges for replacing the heater core/matrix, but I'd guess its alot.

Durabutt,

you are still under warranty right?

If it is a heater core let the dealer dealer worry about it, you paid for the warranty why not use it.

I just had this problem on my 2001 DII, and it turned out to be water running down the firewall and coming through where the heater box comes through. They were able to reseal mine but it took a day or two for them to pull everything out to get down to it and make sure the seal took. Mine only leaked during heavy rain or car washes, but was dripping down through my dash and onto the passenger floor.

Where are the condensate lines from the AC located?
