Here is what I'm contemplating trying to stengthen my DII airbag model ARB. This would ride inside the crush cans and would only be physically bolted on the frame side of the mount. That way the crush can could still compact, but would be less likely to pivot up or down. Also, I think i would put a sleeve over the outside of the crush can around the central section where the cut out for the winch is. This should strenthen the mount, but still allow the crush cans to compress inward during a collison. Any thoughts?

AH HA. Got it. Anyway, hope this pitiful drawing gives an idea as to what I'm considering and hope it gives enough to get some good feedback from the other DII drivers and bumper makers out there.

Thanks and let me know your thoughts on this idea.

Greg, I don't have a DII but did have an air bag ARB on my 96 Disco. I ended up basically eliminating the crush cans and welding the entire thing solid. My winch brace is welded in place on the bumper, between the frame rails. I also reinforced the wings by boxing them in with square tube and now the bumper is stronger than anything else on the market

Also, at the same time I was stregthening the bumper and removing the crush cans, I bought it in toward the vehicle by two inches.

I plan on making some notes and submitting a tech article to Dweb. Here is a pic of the work in progress.

Maybe it is looking for a new home :)

I don't think it is sucking in the mud. The RE is well protected in there without any electrical motor or gearbox parts vulnerable to taking a direct hit.

Moe,

Short of shortening the crush can sleeves, what else do you have to do to bring the bumper in by 2 inches? How major of a change is this to the install process? What trimming did this require on the truck? Thanks, Greg

Greg, after shortening the crush cans by 2" you will need to . . .
1) remove the light/antenna tabs from the top bar, if you have them. They are removed in the photo below
2) Trim the side rails that wrap around the front quarter panel down by 2". See the photo above. I also trimmed the wings to create more clearance in front of the tires.
3) You will probably have to grind or cut some metal from the inside edge of the bar as it wraps around the front corners. The area I refer to you can see in the photo below--center far left.
4) A little plastic will need to be cut too under the lights but it is not noticeable.

Once the bumper is cut to fit, install--without the skid plate--is the no different or harder than the regular ARB bumper.
