I am having a problem w /my 97 that seems to be related to the locking ignition cylinder in the steering column. When the key is inserted I can not turn the key clockwise to the first or second positions to start the vehicle. Has anyone experienced this problem ? and is there a solution short of replacing the entire unit? (The new part from the local LR dealer costs $500.) |

I had the same problem with my 96. I took it to an automotive locksmith and had them repair/replace the tumblers in the key cylinder. I had it back the next day and it cost about 150 bucks. You can probably have it done cheaper than that, or maybe do it yourself. I guess it depends on how much time you have. Good luck! PK |

Partick,Thank you for the advice. I went to a locksmith but he was afraid to disassemble and inspect the cylinder because he said it is a "sealed" unit and he was not sure it could be reassembled after he cleaned or fixed it. If you could give me the name/phone# of the repair shop you used I could contact them to get some additional info. P.s. we had a new key made and it sticks just like the original ones. |

Rob: The locksmith I went to was Barry Lock and Unlock Service in Indianapolis and the number is 317-388-1808. The only additional thing I can tell you is that above the lock cylinder itself is the bulb assembly which lights the ring around the ignition. The wire attachments to this bulb are delicate (Lucas) so you need to be careful when the cylinder is removed. I hope this helps! By the way, prior to getting this fixed I had a new key made as well. And, like yours, mine stuck in the cylinder just as bad as the original. A bent key is a sure way to screw up the cylinder, at least that was the likely cause in my case. Anyway, good luck! PK |

You might try WD40, use a can with the straw, get the straw into the ignition switch a sray a pretty good amount, the fluid will come out around the dash below the steering colum. then take the key and work it in and out, see if that helps. be careful not to force anything you dont want to break the key off in the cylinder. I had the same thing happen to me last night while we were at DisneyWorld. The on-call locksmith was not able to fix it and referred me to someone who knew LRs. He came out, cut another key and managed to get it in and started the engine. Now, we can't get the key out. He estimated it would run around $250-$350 to reomove and repair the cylinder (an option I was not prepared to pay for). In Tampa, where I live, we have a good LR salvage yard. I called them up and the owner told me I could replace it for $100. The locksmith visit still cost me $95, but I figured I'll just drive it home and replace it tomorrow. I'll try a few more things, like adjusting the shifter cable and see what happens. Wish me luck! John K. Tampa, FL 1998 Disco LSE |
