After reading several posts, I'm considering 90 wt in the swivels of my '97 discovery which came with grease. Can this be done without dismantleing the housing? Suggestions? |

Even if you tap and drill a drain plug, I don't see how you can get all the grease and gunk out without dismantling the swivels. I would not do any machining to make drain plugs without dismantling first, either. Each his own, but to me it just seems like too much of a PITA. Then again I avoid water and mud like the plague. |

Yea, Axel hit the nail on the head! If you're not doing water and mud, then this is a pretty big job. But if you are seeing water and mud, then doing this once, is better than doing it every time you go wading. But certainly don't drill the housing without taking the housing off the truck. That's asking for trouble. If it were me, I'd just take my time, strip it, fit new seals, new wheelbearings, check the CVs, inspect the axle splines, etc. Basically just do a thorough job. I'd also replace the stock hardware with Grade 5 or grade 8 and use the proper jointing compounds to ensure no surprises later. -P |

Thanks so far! I'm pretty sure my discovery has a drain, fill, and level plug in the swivel housing already. I'd just like to get the grease out and oil in. Actually I've got a right hand axel seal going because I've noticed a bit of leaking around the swivel seal for a year or so. Looks like thin grease (mixed with oil). This probably indicates a bad swivel seal also. |

Well, Just set aside a saturday, or a weekend if you're new to this and take everything apart. Clean it thoroughly, replace the seals, and put it back. One other thing. If you can, find out what size the threads are for the fill, drain, and inspect holes. I'd like to replace that crap rover ships with something useful. -P |

Anybody using Amsoil gear oil in their swivel housings? If so, what weight? Any problems? Seems like I read on this board some time ago that using synthetic oil in the swivel balls (and differentials) might cause leaks whereas conventional gear oil did not leak. Thanks, Norm |

I did a 60k on a D90 2 weeks ago and the guy went to all Amsoil. It was regular 90wt or 75w90 in the diffs and swivels. No leaks to this point. Synth in the transfer case was leaking past the old seal, but after a seal replacement it was fine. -P |

Robert, I have a 97 as well, and I have no drain plug in my swivels. |
