I can't lock my center differential. I can shift it through HIGH and LOW, but can't shift to the left and lock the diff. I have a 98 Disco I. Help this sorry ass desert rat. Forgive me, I'm a new-comer to the Land Rover world, over from the "dark side" of the Jeep Wrangler. After shredding 2 Wranglers over the past few years, I saw the light and sat my ass into a Discovery.....no looking back now.....NEVER EVER!! |

If it's never been used you may need to get under the vehicle and spray some wd-40 where the linkage meets the bolt at the transfer case. This is common for a Disco that's never had it's CDL locked for a LONG time. |

There is tons of info on this , search dif-lock. This describes it very well. Ken,I have a '96 with the same problem, went through the whole she-bang. The rod that moves the linkage freezes up from lack of use. Some people have had success by spraying some WD-40 on the rod from below and working it back and forth, little by little. I tried that for 2 or 3 weeks with no luck, mine was so frozen up I had to remove the whole shifter box and disassemble it. I wished I had just done that to begin with, it was not that hard, and only took about 2 hours to do. My suggestion is this, slide under truck on pass-side, look up with a flashlight to the tranny tunnel. There is a long linkage bar that drops down from the side of the shift box to the transfer case. Reach up and grab that bar, see if there is any play at all. The bar pivots in the middle, if you can, try to spray some WD-40 on that pivot point and at the top where the linkage bar connects to the shaft that emerges from the shift box. Try that a couple times, spray it and then try to work the linkage., You will know pretty soon if it seems to be loosening up..If it doesn't, don't fret, worse case scenario is only a 2 or 3 hour job, pretty easy. Don't lean to hard on the shift lever, it should move pretty easy. No sense having to tear it apart AND replace the shift lever!! Good Luck!! JMcD |
