I put in a new thermostat a couple weeks ago, removed dist cap and rotor and the plug on the side of the dist.

Put everything back and was very hard to start. Wouldn't, in fact. Next day it did but ran rough at idle.

Cap and rotor were worn, so got new (aftermarket).

Now starts and runs fine until you drive it for 30 minutes or so, then it's rough at idle; sometimes dies but only at idle. Runs just fine above 1500 rpm.

Anyone know what's wrong? Thought I might have gotten a bit of moisture inside the dist, but that ought to be gone by now...yes?

TIA.

You say that you put in a new thermostat... did the engine overheat?? If it did then this may have warped something and caused a vacuum leak. Vacuum leaks only manifest themselves when the throttle is closed. Above 1500 rpms you wouldn't know there's a problem.

Did you dissassemble anything else... like part of the distributor, or any vacuum hoses?? I would be suspicious of any thing you fooled around with lately. Double check all hoses and electrical connections you touched. Also suspicious of aftermarket cap & rotor.

Sound like the amplifer might be shorting out when it gets warm.

How do I find out if amplifier is shorting, or bad? I did unplug it when I changed the t/stat.

Engine did not overheat, was running cold, t/stat stuck open.

The life of the ignition amp is pretty ruff. If you got moisture in it while changing the thermostat, then that may be causing the problem. Unfortunately you may have to pull the dist to change it.

There is a test procedure in the service manual.
