can anyone tell me how to remove the radio on a '95 disco? does it require taking apart the dash?

Removal requires a proprietary, five-sided tool used by BMW. However, a 2 or 3 mm (I forget which) allen key or hex wrench works OK. Your are retracting little 'ears' on both sides of the head unit so the radio can slide out.

Remember your code first...you'll need it to re-initialize the unit.

Cheers

thanks! I'm actually taking it out to get to the serial # so the dealer can look up the code. the code matched to the VIN does not work. guessing PO must have replaced radio at some point??

Derek-

I had the same problem with mine. Try calling the dealership that sold the vehicle new. Each dealership has an "in-house" computer system that doesn't neccessarily match the LRNA network. The dealership that sold my Disco had re-programmed the code at some point. They had the correct, new code in their system but the LRNA network still had the original VIN-matched (worthless) code.

thanks for the tip joe.

well, I pulled the radio and the dealer looked up the code based off radio serial #. it was different than the code based off the VIN. BUT, neither of them work!

Derek:
When I got my RR, the radio/OEM did not accept the code. Called LR/NA-they gave/confirmed the VIN-radio code etc, it to be the orig, but it did not accept the blood* code. Dealer removed the unit, sent it out (to Pioneer most likely)
It returned with the correct code on the orig radio. Cost :$100+tax, included shipping. Not terrible as far as dealer service and $$$ concerned. Cheers- doug

Hey guys, love the site! I just bought a 99 Disco this past Monday, the 1st. The first thing I'm planning to do is either add a cd changer or replace the head unit since it only has the stock cassette player. Any ideas on what works easiest? I've been checking the boards and I think everyone has a different opinion of will and won't work.

Anyway, on this code business, is there any way to check the code before I pull the radio to see what I'm in for without calling the dealer or is this a give the vin # and he tells you sort of thing.

SG..What is it exactly that you do with the 2 or 3 mm hex wrenches to get the radio out? There are 2 holes on the LH side and 2 on the right. Just curoius. (95 Disco also)

paul,

there are two tiny holes on the radio face, one on each side, which have access to the 2-3mm hex bolts. just loosen those and the radio pulls right out. I used an allen wrench that size and it worked fine.

On my D2 SD, I just had an alpine 6CD installed, and when finished the radio didn't work, so the guy just put his fingers in the cassette hole and pulled it right out, plugged the antenna back in, and pushed it back again. No sign of any locking device there.
