I was thinking of getting 235/85 tires... my only concern is the loss of power. is the loss of power noticeable..? most people say i should just get them and dont look back. any suggestions

Gear down the diffs..
4.10's and 235's will put you close to the factory final drive ratio..

get them and don't look back.. unless you live in the mountains (over 3k feet). Then regear to 4.10s and don't look back.

Altitude, shmaltitude...
Losing that much gearing is going to suck no matter where you drive. Even in the FLA swamps, I would want some freakin' wheelspeed...

What are you talking about? I just test fit 34" tires on my 91 RR and it was fine. Drove around town, off-road, checked braking, merging, etc. No problems whatsoever.

Slava? that you?
What am I taling about?
Whether you are in the mountains, or death valley, you're still increasing tire diameter by 16% going from a stock 29" to a 34". I imagine you did not make the jump to 34's from stock tires, therefore did not feel much of a difference in power loss. Ever heard of compression braking? Guess what? you have none with 34's and stock gears.
Your engine will not be working in the correct rpm range with gearing that is so far off. I read your comments on the 34's. LTB's need some serious wheelspeed to clean themselves. You will not achieve that wheelspeed in the correct rpm range without regearing.

Do what you want P-(your reputation preceeds you), but don't pass that sort of advice onto someone who doesn't know any better. Low range gearing is bad enough in these vehicles. As far as I'm concerned the 3.54's aren't enough in stock trim.

HELL YES IT'S NOTICEABLE!

Alright Craig,

My swap to the 33.5" tires was not from stock. It was from tires 1" taller than stock. Is the difference noticiable? I suspect that it is. I didn't feel it was detrimental in my case. I might well be in someone elses case.

The gentleman asked for suggestions. Mine clearly differ from yours. Does that make yours more valuable than mine? Maybe, if you know his needs better than I do. I won't speculate on that.

I don't know what you meant when you said my reputation precedes me but in this case as in others, I've simply given my opinon on something that I have done. What size are you running and what have you tried?

33x12.50x15 MTR's w/ 4.10's, and I don't think the 4.10's are enough. I won't go into what I've tried, but the last 20 years in off-road motorsports (on two and four wheels) have brought many different combos. Gearing is just too important to ignore....

Don't you guys think he might get more mileage out of waiting until he locks up to split the diffs? I know I wouldn't want to pay twice.

I'm just asking here since you guys have a lot more experience offroad than me.

I have had 235/85 GY MTRs on my 90 for a few thousand miles and I'm looking to regear soon to 4.11s. The power loss is noticeable especially up hill...So if you wanna be happy regear, but you can get away without doing it. Having not done it I wish I had done the whole deal at once.

My 2 pennies,
Pete

It also depends what is under the hood.I had the 4.2 and I couldn't tell a difference at all. If you ave the 3.9 you are going to need to regear. If you are lookin for a set of four, check out rovercanibal.com , I sold my Rangie to him when I wrecked it, had suspension, 4 new BFG KM MT's, and a whole lotta other stuff.

I just looked on the Great Basin site and a 4.1 ring and pinion gear is only 395... is this a conversion that a competent DIY mechanic could handle or would this be more suitable for a garage

Setting up the Ring and Pinion isn't rocket science, but it does require some skills and some specialized tools such as a dial gauge. I decided to have my locker installed (and therefore the R&P setup) at Great Basin because it was cheaper than buying the tools and doing it myself. I generally follow that pattern. If it costs me more to do it myself, I'll let the shop do it.

Something to keep in mind. If you screw up your settings, you could well destroy the ring, pinion, and maybe some other things. That could well be a costly mistake. If I were you, I'd let Great Basin do the work.

You do know that you must do both diffs together right? I don't want to insult you, but some people don't realize that you have to change both at the same time.

Nick B,

my rangie doesn't want to spin over 3k rpm, so i like it on 245/75s better than on stockers. 235/85 is a bigger jump, so - suit yourself.

I'd say get a locker or truetrac, install it yourself, and if/when you discover that your gears are screwed up, get 4.10s.

not to say it's a proper way to do it...
there's more things to screw up when you replace r&p as compared to mounting the ring gear onto another diff carrier.

I have been running 235/85's for almost 2 years, didnt notice much change in power, 4.11 gear would be nice, but i can wait on getting into the diff until i get lockers (hate paying for labor twice). i did find out that my thorttle cable was only opening up 3/4 of the way; correcting that really gave me some power.
