Just pulled into the driveway after work and had a high-pitched wine from the back right area of the Disco. After wine died off, I started the engine back up and it stuttered a bit then fired true. Drove it a little bit and all was well. No whine when I shut it down the second time. 96 Disco with 79,600 miles. Original fuel pump. Is this fuel pump about to crap out? Need to know NOW, as I'm about 36 hours away from a major trip. Please advise. If it is the fuel pump, someone please point me in the right direction to get one IMMEDIATELY (i.e. Saturday morning so I can leave for Utah by noon Saturday). I can always try the dealer for the part, but I prefer to share my money with this group. Money is no object, as I am fabulously wealthy. Checked the manual and these archives, and it looks like an easy fix. Would a trailside fix be a bad idea (after camp is set up in Flagstaff Saturday night or Sunday morning)??? If I get myself stranded, at least I'll have beer & food & company... I just know that the Rover Gods are shitting on me right before my trip because I just bought the wife an Explorer (shuddup Ho ) Thanks. -Blue |

i dont' know about the noise. but i guess it's related to the fact that you are about to go somewhere without me, and the fact that you got your wife an explorer. LOL |

Hey Ho, you're the one with the pool to clean...not me...I cleaned mine last Saturday and got a nice sunburn. Now it's R&R time... Thanks, Bryan - I'm fine with pickin up a new one, but is that the problem? Never had to fuck with the fuel pump before... And Why would I want a DII when I have this perfectly good DI to play with? Character has an intangible value... |

Bill- This might sound kinda weird, but check the bearing on your water pump pulley. A couple months back, I started getting a whining noise every time I shut down the engine (when it was hot). I swore the noise was the fuel pump. It sounded like it was right behind me. After a lot of trial and error by manually stalling the engine, I narrowed it down to something in the engine compartment. Following Kyle's advice, I then removed the belt. That helped me pinpoint the waterpump bearing. |

Blue: I know what you do for a living and unless the wage scales out West are vastly different from the middle of the country, you must have inherited that money, or you got it from selling drugs at Dead shows! Oops, not drugs, veggie Burritos... As for your fuel pump, it is not a big deal at all. Go to your local auto parts store and buy a fuel pump from a '94 Mazda pickup. Switch the polarity on the power wires leading to the pump and you're all set. Even considering the time to drill out the screws on the hatch and convincing the parts guy I weasn't nuts, I only had a few hours tied up in swapping mine out. As easy as it is to do this, and given the miles on your rig, it is almost worth it to do it as a prophylactic step. Peace, Paul |

OK three working ideas: 1) fuel pump from a '94 Mazda pickup 2) pump from early 80's Caddy with central fuel injection 3) new one from Nathan thanks P.S. joking about the wealth....which is why I'm now researching old Caddy & Mazda fuel pumps |

BLue's got none, so it ain't a problem for him BLue, i hear ya. I was counting on leaving the rangie to my wife and taking _my_ white 96 Disco (with 107kmi) to the hole, but now even the (ever so reliable) rangie runs like crap and brakes require some very skillful driving... peter |

I was joking about the Veggie Burritos too! It was probably Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter you were selling in the parking lot! In my case, it was hamburgers and beer-paid for most of summer tour in '92. BTW- the Caddy fuel pump was nearly $100 more than the Mazda pump. They are all made by the same aftermarket manufacturer and have very similar characteristics with respect to pressure and flow. The factory pump had AC proudly molded into the bottom of the pump, however, I was unable to directly cross any of the numbers and ended up with the Mazda part. BTW-Blue, I'm being recruited by a Defense contractor! The potential pay increase is astronomical. Peace, Paul Peace, Paul |

Paul, I like the idea of the '94 Mazda P/U fuel pump (What model P/U?) I know this seems like a stupid question, but how many wires on the pump and by reversing the polarity, do you mean to put the + wire on the ground and vice versa? Is this because the Mazda and LR pumps turn in opposite directions? |

That's the case with the Caddy pump. If you plug them in right out of the box the pump will push in fuel instead of out. I guess it's the same with the Mazda pump. |

As usual, I have no time to tinker right now (leaving tomorrow morning) so I'll be picking up a brand spanking new one from the dealer down the street. Amazingly enough, they only want $265 for the full pump assembly (or $295 if you include a new seal, 2 nuts, and 2 compression fittings...whatever). I'll grab the pump and bring it along just in case mine does crap out. When I get back, I'll play with the other options and see what I can come up with. Anyone plugged in an Airtex #E3240 pump? Thanks again for the advice. P.S. Who wants to buy a new OEM fuel pump next week? Only $600 on ebay....hehehehe |
