I've got a 96 DI, with about 86,000 miles on it. Starting about two weeks ago, after a long (1000 mile) trip, its encountered the following problems: 1) engine is very difficult to start when cold, takes several seconds of cranking and my foot pumping the gas to get it going. 2) until the engine reaches normal operating temperature, it idles extremely erratically, and requires some gas to stabilize. i haven't changed my plugs in about 10,000 miles (SHAME ON ME!!!!) i'm going to do this anyway, but wanted to know if anyone had ever had this happen as a result of worn plugs (Haynes says this is probable..) Any sugguestions for good plugs? i used bosch platinum last year, but they took about 1000 miles to start acting right (erratic idle until they burned in ....)

try changinig the spark plug wires. i had the same problem with my D2. thought it was the plugs, but after changing the plugs the problem persisted. i then discovered one of the spark plug leads was not acting right and change all the wires. now it is smooth again

anon,
platinum plugs are a waste of cash, I believe the recommended plug is copper. I read somewhere that running 5-30 in the winter will allow your starter to turn faster, thus reducing cranking time. Just for kicks, check your fuel pressure. My fuel pump started going bad (excessive cranking) at 100K, just replaced it and my 95's running strong again.

I keep my plat plugs (bosch single electr.) for about 1 year/20k miles and they come out looking fine.

Swap the plugs and wires and hope it fixes it. Mine did the same thing and I ended up having to replace the fuel injectors. They were leaking into the cylinder, not fun. The other thing to consider is check the condition of your battery, if it is on its way out it could not be spinning the starter fast enough to fire, loading the cylinders up, possibly fouling out one or more plugs.. Check the basics. JMcD
