I was told by my dealership that I cant mess with the little subwoofer box in the back, and that the whole system in my 96 was all complete. Meaning that I cant add anything or everything must be replaced. Well lets just say that i want newer subs, but like the speakers, can i have them replaced with a new brand that fits? Is there some funky conversion kit or something????

JL Audio makes a 6" sub called WO6. You can find it for about $59 a piece, you need 2 of course. I "think" they will fit right in, and the guys at the sound shop say that it's OK that it is not sealed.

I am going to buy some, and run them off the factory amp, if it sounds like shit, they only need 90 watts, so a good 180 watt amp (90x2) won't cost much either.

BTW, JL Audio makes a VERY nice sub in the larger 12, 15, & 18 inch range, so I assume that their 6" will be of the same quality.

Yes, you can use an aftermarket woofer, but the amp that is running them is very weak. If you look at the magnet on all of the speakers in your Disco you will find that they are small and require very little power to operate, but will distort at high volume. When you purchase a new set to go in the rear keep in mind the efficiency. Look for something in the 100db plus area. Any speaker that is smaller than 8in will be fine in a "free-air" situation. Also, make sure the impedence of your new speakers match that of your old. It will say on the magnet or you can use a multimeter to test them. If you run too low of an impedence on the amp you will burn up the power supply.

I just bought a "package" from Infinity. Its called the Basslink. It is a sub & amp all in one (similar to a bazooka tube). But the great thing is that the Infinity is a 10" woofer and it will fit in the rear storage compartment (either side) and is a VERY easy install. I bought it from Crutchfield. The woofer and wiring kit was about $ 450. Sounds great and everything else is factory!!

Bob,
You have a picture of the basslink installed?
How did you hook it down or did you just set it in the compartment.

Robert,
Your walnut box with the 8" subs looks great, was that hard to hook to the door?

I've heard of someone who put two JL Audio 10W0's in the back of his disco, one in each storage compartment with a special box designed for that space. Anyone know who this is or what the design is, i'd like to get two 10's.
