I am trying to figure out if the hard shifting "klunking" noise on my 95 Disco is coming from weak U- joints. Anyone ever change them....and is it a difficult job to do....thanks,, Glen

Glen:
Many other places for clunks to come from (in my case, a bad rear diff and the rotoflex) - search the archives for clunks. There's also the infamous mainshaft spline wear clonk, and I seem to recall postings where loose suspension components were the cause. Plus, as nearly everyone will say, all rovers clunk - it's a fact of life. As far as the u-joints, get under the truck (with the engine off and the muffler and cats cold!) and twist the drive shafts vigorously by hand, and try to shake them side-to-side at each end, and see if the joints have any slop in them. While you're under there, examine the rotoflex carefully for cracks. If you haven't replaced it yet on a 95, it's probably the source of the clunk. Search the archives for u-joints if they need replacing - been discussed often. Not too difficult a job. Good luck.

If you have a '95 and don't know how old the U-joints are, replace them. Whether they are the cause of your clunk or not, they almost certainly could benefit from replacement.

Go to NAPA and get their part number 344. They should cost you about $25.00 each.

Be aware though that if you have not regularly greased the sliding shafts, you will be in for an adventure. They can and will seize up, requiring truly mythic proportions of heroic effort to separate. But, the good news is that you can ignore the gloom and doom statements of your local driveline shop as once you are able to separate the pieces, you can successfully reassemble them with no ill effects. Might have to buy a hydraulic press to affect disassembly, but they will go back together!

Peace,
Paul
