I noticed a lot of posts regarding aftermarket subs and stereos in DIIs and figured Id post some pics of what I did in my 00 DII. Hope this helps.

Parts:
Deck: Alpine CDA-7873 CD Player, 60W x 4 V-Drive Hybrid Amplifier, 4 Volt Subwoofer PreOut, 3 PreOuts, Wireless Remote Control, XM Satellite Radio Ready

Amp: Phoenix Gold XS2300, 2 Channel Mosfet Amplifier running 4 ohm Mono 300 x 1 powering only the 12 sub

Sub: JL Audio 12W6 Subwoofer, 12 installed in a custom box fit into where driver side storage bin was.

MB Quart QM 2213CX 5.25in 2-Way Component Speakers (front doors), MB Quart DKC-113 5.25in 2-Way Coaxial Speakers (rear doors)

I used a basic 2-Channel amplifier kit to wire in the amp to the battery, also I spoke to a local high-end car audio shop and they suggested I use 2x 30amp fuses at battery to prevent overheating and fire from amp. This was in combination with the fuses located on the amp. Wire used for the amp was 8 gauge from start to finish. Amp produces minimal heat within the enclosure and I have had no problems with the system in over 1.5 years.

I originally had the basic 6speaker LR Discovery system, but I replaced the stock LR speakers with MB Quart speakers at all points.

As for the subwoofer enclosure, I chose the left side because it had some exterior scratches, other than that the passenger side would work just fine. The plastic enclosure pops right out, and then I measured twice and cut once. After the enclosure was screwed and glued secure, I went to a local auto upholstery shop and found some cheap carpet that matched the interior of my Disco, hot glued in place and fastened it in place with the amp and sub already situated. I used four 3 screws to fasten it down from the inside. The nice thing is, if I ever remove the system, I can put the cargo bin back in place without any notice of modifications because all the install fasteners was done from the inside.

I am not a stereo professional, nor am I an electrical engineer; I only have good mechanical ability. The entire job took me an entire Saturday afternoon, but it was fun and the quality of sound smokes anything land rover every envisioned for the Discos. With all parts it cost me around $1000.00 give or take a little.

You may want to think about getting some air to that amp.. It's going to run hotter then it should the way you have it mounted with no air flow.. I can't see how much room you have around it in the pictures but, it doesn't look like enough.. Mite want to run it for a while and then check to see how hot it gets. Nice and clean install though..

On the subject of stereo's, would just swapping out the speakers (and wiring the sub to my pre-out) in my 98 Disco make much of a difference to the sound with a Sony MDX-7900 head unit?

Since removing the stock one, the sub has stopped (plan to re-wire that), and the quality sounds like a pebble in a tin can.

Don't want to spend too much as I only do about 15,000 miles a year, not enought to warrant a big spend on the music system.

Thanks

PS: Sweet install. If I did not have the seats fitted in the back, I'd think about doing something similar.

if you just want it to sound good and don't want to spend much $$, just swap out the old speakers. they are very likely to have 'frozen'. meaning the cone is stuck either in the up or down position. they are pretty much crap speakers anyhow. i just got a pair of decent JBLs that i am puting in. you are able to retain the rear subs with an aftermarket head unit.

Hey guys,

Here's some answers to follow up questions. No steering wheel controls, sucks but oh well. And as for the heat building up from the amp, not a problem at all. First the amp I chose runs cool, I tested the ambient temp with a digitial therm right after I installed the system, in the middle of summer with the outside air temp at 90', the amp produced about 20% less heat than the air temp. You can't tell from the pics, but there is about 1" of room on all sides of the amp. The guys at the local shop said this was fine and the amp had plenty of ventilation as well.

Where is a good place to order stereo parts on the internet? I have a couple of shops around, but they are a little expensive.

Sorry if this has been asked but is the enclosure custom or can it be purchased retail (through a distributor)?

Thanks guys.

I'll get my sub wired up to the head unit, and then swap out all the speakers (inc. those in the sub) for something a bit better.

Getting any kind of quality sound over the noise of a diesel engine is an uphill struggle. ;)
