I tried to install the homelink transmitter in my D1. There was supposed to be a plug behind the cover plate for a simple plug and play install. There wasn't so I spliced into the always hot lead and the ground lead to the overhead light. Now the homelink, forward overhead light, rear overhead light, radio, and clock are malfunctioning. The clock resets to 1:00 everytime the beast is started. I get a faint glow from each light as long as its the only device turned on, otherwise nada. The radio/ CD player blinks unless another device is turned on - then nothing. All fuses are good, reading 13.8V on both sides. I also get 13.8V supplying the light until I turn something else on, at which time the voltage drops to 4.3V. I'm stumped, please help.

Lucas strikes again. What year Disco? If '97 or later, check the Multi Funcion Unit (MFU).

Where did you get your homelink setup? I'm thinking about installing one in my 95. How long did it take to install?

Bryan-

I scavanged the unit from a salvaged Disco, cost me $30. Rover Connection has it for about $100 I think.

As for installation, I still don't have mine working. In theory, it takes no time to install. Just pop out the existing cover plate, plug the homelink unit into the existing plug (if present; probably not in a '95, then just tap into the dome light power as I attempted to do), and snap the homelink unit into place.

I need to look into this MFU issue. Is that a service-able part or do I need to replace it?

Jack,

What and where is the MFU? Is it the large green relay under the passenger dash? Or is it something and somewhere else?

the MFU is behind the interior fuse box under the driver side dash

You must've spliced into a purple/brown wire from the dome light. That wire also goes to the clock and radio, and is protected by fuse 6 in satellite fuse block 2, which is connected to the multifunction unit, but I don't think the MFU is involved. The lighting wire to the MFU is a purple/blue wire at position 1 on the black 24-pin connector to the MFU, but it connects the switches to the light bulbs, and is not related to the purple/brown wire I mentioned.

You might want to try splicing into a sunroof switch wire, which the hot ones are green/pink-green/blue for one switch and green/red-green/orange for the other. They're protected by one 30A fuse, and the sunroof controller is the only thing on it. The sunroof control unit is also not connected to the MFU. Just don't try opening the sunroofs the same time you hit the Homelink or you might blow a fuse, since it seems the transmitter takes quite a current draw.

I used the wires up there for my CB and it works fine. Purple/brown for 12V+ and black for ground. Intended to be a quick temp. install for a trip but it worked fine so I left it. CB transmits and receives fine with good range.

Are you sure the homelink is good or may have it been damaged while in the salvaged Disco? I'd put it on the bench and test it while connected directly to a reliable 12V source, via regulated power supply or car battery.

Oh, have you undone what you did to see if the problem stops?

The first thing I did was undo; the homelink is out of the loop but the symptoms remain.

Does Homelink work with apartment complex gates?
