(sorry for the duplicate post - newbie here!)

I need some help with some tranny problems. I have to start out in the first gear in my auto tranny - and then after I get going, and can shift up to Drive. But if I stop, I have to start out again in 1st gear!

I was trying to climb a small asphalt hill (urban 4-wheeling) and when I got crossed up,
I went to lock the center differential. The diff lock has always engaged a little slow (I figured it was lack of use - I've only had this '98 for
about 4 months - the prior owner was in California) but this time I was slowly rolling backwards - then I hear a loud "clunk" - I figure
it had engaged and tried to go up the hill again - and I had no power at all to the wheels.

I checked to make sure I hadn't just knocked the transfer case into neutral - nope it was in 4 hi still - so I put the transmission in
neutral and then I try 4-lo > still no power. I shift back to 4-hi and put the transmission in 1st gear > IT WORKS! But now, the
problem is, I have to start out in 1st gear. If I have the gear selector in any other gear - it won't go!

Any ideas??? I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow - but thought I might see if the almighty Discoweb gurus had any ideas also!

HELP - my wifes going to kill me if I need to put a whole new transmission in!

TIA

from ashcroft:

Q. I have a 4sp ZF, when I select "D" the vehicle won't move, when I select "1" the vehicle moves off. I can then select "D" and continue to drive normally. If I stop I have to start in first again. Why?

A. A sprag clutch has "inverted" and will need replacing. No further damage will occur if you continue to drive but you will need to select "1" every time to start moving. A rebuild is required to correct this. :(

Does this mean a complete tranny rebuild?

How much is a typical rebuild?

Is this a recommended dealer only service or should I use my local tranny shop?

Thanks!

Any good tranny shop can work on the ZF'box. It is widely used in Jaguars, M-Benz's, LR and likely Volvo, among others.

ZF's are used in GM cars too and BMW but I really didn't think MB used them. I though MB was the last company to still build their own. When did that change?

Change??? MB has been using the ZF hp_2_ transmission line since like 1976 when the top transimission was the ZF hp322. MB has been using various models of zf automatics and manuals since shortly after ZF started building passenger car transmissions. The zf hp422 in a Discovery is similar but not identical to the transmissions used in numerous models from MB, BMW, Jaguar, Volvo... pretty much every rear wheel drive european vehicle with a 4 speed automatic. Jaggi import export is the best source for parts and information www.JIE.com.
