I'm looking to upgrade my tires, but I dont know whats best... is the extra weight on 265/75-16 a concern with stock gearing? Are the 235/85-16's too thin to float through mud? I off-road probably, only....10% of the time, and other wise do a lot of highway (random college road trips..) driving.. do the MT handle well on the pavement? How quickly do they wear down from highway use etc? Should I stick with ATs? Oh yeah...I'm looking at getting either BFG MT or ATs...and I'd also consider Goodyear... Thanks -Chase 97 Disco |

Chase: You will need to lift your truck to fit the 235/85/16s. I currently run 235/85/16 BFG AT on a '95 Disco with Rovertym lift. It was necessary for me to trim the fenders slightly to clear the bigger tires. I have not found the narrow tires to be a major impediment and I hit it pretty hard when given the chance. peace, Paul |

The procomp mud terrians are about the best i have found for the price/noise/wearability. I had a set for a good 20k miles with little wear, and they hardly make any noise john |

is the extra weight on 265/75-16 a concern with stock gearing? the weight difference between the 235 and 265 is neglible. Are the 235/85-16's too thin to float through mud? floating for the most part is a myth, there is no floating to be done in a vehicle that weighs as much as a disco. now if you had a buggy type vehicle with paddle tires and a big V8 that would be a different story. tall and skinny tires usually do very well in mud and fit with minimal trimming. |

Chase, 265/75's aren't really wide enough to be great for floatation, and 235/85's aren't really tall enough to be "tall and skinny". Either option is a good choice for your rover, and once you buy one or the other you probably won't notice a difference either way other than looks. Personally, I would do the 235/85's because the little bit of extra height will help out in more cases than the extra width. On AT's vs. MT's if you wheel in the mud at all, you will be sorely dissapointed with any of the AT's available. The Dunlop Radial Rover RT's is a better option which performs right in betweent the two. I think MT's which are siped perform admirably in wet and snowy conditions. If you plan on hitting the mud a lot, I would go with those. I would also choose the Goodyear MTR's over the BFG MT's. I haven't owned either, but have wheeled with people in both and have seen the MTR's basically outperform the BFG's in the mud and snow. Not too muddy the water too much, but I don't know much about the MTR's longevity. The Bridgestone Dueller MT's have a very similar tread pattern, perform very well on the road, and last a very long time. My buddy has these siped on his Dodge Dakota and they made it to about 75K. It it is daily driver and work truck. Tom |
