Went to the pressure washer today to spray all the oil off my engine. Something in the back of my mind told me to just leave it alone but I couldnt help it. Sprayed deegreeser all over it and then sprayed the hell out of it. Well you all know what happened huh? Finally did get it started but it was gurgling and poping and missfireing and would not rev past 2k rpm. After a while it did start to run almost corectly untill later tonight. Now it willnot idle. I can keep it running with my foot on the gas and rpm at about1500. Anyone know if I've done any real damage or will it just dry out with time? Or if I can spray anything or what should I do? Also check engine light is now on again. Please help anyone.

Thanks

unplug all the spark plug wires and blow on them, they're just a little damp, it'll all be fine....

Good question. I would like to have my engine detailed in order to see any "new" leaks (+to remove the stucco known as MUD). I inquired at the dealership during an oil change and they recommended not cleaning the engine. Question: if you're not supposed to, then how do they detail the engines for resale?

Brian -
not sure about permanent damage, but I did the same thing when I first got my Disco, degreaser and all. To make a long story short, I wound up having to get about 10 gaskets replaced because the engine started leaking like a seive. I guess all that sludge on there was a rather important Rover oil retention sub-system.

Luckily I was under a 1 year certified warranty.

Now I subscribe to the creed I first heard here on DiscoWeb: "A dirty Rover is a happy Rover"

P.S hope your "cleaning" winds up better than mine.

Brian,

I have found that if you pull the plug wires both ends 1 at a time (with the car off) and spray WD-40 in them this will sometimes fix this problem, I have also found it necessary to spray some WD-40 in the distributor cap after deep wading to get them to start.

I have not done this with my rover but other vehicles in the past so take this information as is where is no warranty implied or expressed

Dave--

This might seem like a silly question..but where is the distributor cap in this crazy machine?

97+ is Distributorless....don't bother looking, you wont find it.

Dry off the plugs and wire boots and you should be fine.

Thanks all..I am working on it right now. Just realized that I had the honor of the first prblem question on the reborn discoweb. cool. Now I can tell my wife that (she wont watch it) the video and stickers were a great investment. Glad discweb is back online.

Brian, In addition to the items mentioned, two things 1) land rover had a 'water ingress' kit for the disco I. It added protection to the ECU on the passenger inner fender. Check with your dealer if you do not have a one foot 'extra' piece of weather stripping on the top of the passenger fender, where the hood closes. 2) I have had water enter my ECU when cleaning. It will produce the same symptoms you describe. You can either, leave everything in place and wait (a day or two) for it to dry out. Or you can remove the washer tank, remove the ECU, take the cover off, and allow it to dry quickly. When replacing, make certain to use new plastic plugs to hold the cover over the ECU (black plastic cover). You can also seal this cover to the inner fender with silicon/grease to help keep water out.
Once I added the water egress kit, and sealed the plastic cover, I have not had any water issues. This includes pressure washing the motor, with degreaser (gunk). Good luck, John

I had the same problem with 97 disco.
ECU was wet , took it out and dried it with hair dryer. water was actually in on the leads, i almost died. I took all the plugs out in the meantime , cleaned em up and WD 40 on the wires.
dialectric greased the ECu lines and reassembled, also sealed up the cover with a bead of grease as well. vavooooooom!!!
My mechanic friend indicated to me also, the sensor on the air intake between the filter and theengine is very water $en$itive. He recommended, taken it off and covering with a bag, and of course the two open ends need to be sealed up with a bag and wash away, gently.
good luck

LOL, seems to be alot of experience with this! My 94 has never failed to start...except for the time the cam broke...and once when the ignition module popped of the distrubutor.

Brian
...oh yeah, and the time I forgot to replace the ground wire after changing the starter :)

Wouldn't know, hehe. Mine is so simple. That damn window ECU sure sucks some kind of balls though! Maybe moth balls, :) I've kinda neglected the whole passenger footwell.

What I don't understand is why use a pressure washer? Why not simply use a garden hose and some liberal amounts of Simple Green? With SG, you don't need that high-pressure blasting water into your electronics and the sludge, oil, everything else washes away. Try it next time, you will be amazed at what it removes.

Is simple green "safe" for most metals, plastics, and rubbers?
And yes I said "rubbers"!! = )

I think it is, I've used it plenty with no troubles. Costco sells it by the gallons...that's the way to go.

Simple Green, if left in contact for too long, will etch aluminum. Use it, just be sure to rinse well.

Dave,,

Thanks.......got it fixed..took out the spark plug wires--sprayed them down with wd40 and blew them out with air compressor. ran like a charm, maybe even better than befor. Thanks for all the help everyone.
