Recently started cutting out after sharp jolts from bumps and now has stopped activating it all together. Also makes a load "buzz" through the speakers when you turn it on. Buzz is same loudness no matter what the volumn control is set. After the buzz, all works well including the WB. Any ideas??? Thanks, Jaime 93RRLWB |

Jaime, Do you get an "error" on your radio read-out? DarkTari 92 County |

DarkTari, Nope - the only difference is the spot that normally illuminated when the CD changer operated no longer is highlighted. When you cycle through the bands, only the FM and AM are selectable. Thanks, Jaime |

Your laser may be knocked out of alignment and therefore the head unit is not recognizing any CD changer. When I had my Disco, I bought a CD Changer for it through the internet and it was shipped to me packed very poorly, i.e. got knocked around during shipping, hooked it up and same problem as yours. Returned it and got another one and it worked. I bet your laser is misalinged, maybe try a CD laser cleaner. |

AlanB, Thanks for the information. As I'm a totally lost when it comes to chasing electrons around, what is a CD laser cleaner??? Assume you can get one at like Circuit City or the like?? Arthur, Thanks for the idea and possibly a solution. Out of curiosity, why did you change out the oem radio?? Sound quality or necessity?? WBR, Jaime |

You can get the CD laser cleaners at best buy, etc. They have tiny brushes attached to a CD and you put it into the CD player. The tiny brushes then clean the laser, should be under $10. If your laser is just dirty then you can try to use the CD laser cleaner and maybe the laser will start reading CD's again, but if it is knocked out of alingment then the CD laser cleaner will be of no help. You may also try to search ebay for a used CD changer. Good Luck. |

AlanB, 2 things - first are you aware of a club in Tulsa? http://www.okoffroad.com/okrovers/ second - you feel it is not the radio but the cd player itself not reading the cd therefore not sending a signal that the radio then picks up? regards and thx, Jaime |

Jaime, Exactly, I think it is the CD changer, and not your head unit. Had the same thing happen on my previous 98 disco when I installed a bum CD changer, it would cycle through am, fm, wb but could not find CD. I then installed another one and it worked. As you stated above, it started skipping when jolted, so I still think your laser got knocked out of alignment. I am not sure how you are going to re-align it, maybe bring it to a audio repair store, or give it a good whack with your hand. I looked at the website, very nice, maybe interested in joining, but lack of time would be my limiting factor. By the way, there are some awsome off-roading trails near Clayton Lake, I saw some really outrageously built trucks down there. |

AlanB, Again thanks for the insight. If it is the changer, hopefully it can be repaired or if not possibly Rovercannibles (sp?) has one that can be installed. Yes, understand about the time thing. As I mentioned, the Rovers live in Tulsa and I live on American Airlines. Even so, you still might want to occassionly check it out and see if an event fits your schedule. Again, thx. Jamie, You might also want to remove the head unit and the changer and check all connections. Also check your speaker connections. You maybe losing a ground connection somewhere in the loop. |

AlanB, Will do. It is in David O'brian's shop for some other stuff so I'll mention all of this to him. Usually use LRTulsa, however, he is a club member so putting some business his way also. Regards, Jaime |

Please help with a Similar Situation. In my wife's 91 Rangie, the CD player refused to work for a year. Every time it was selected, the readout on the head unit was " error". You could hear the CD changer trying to select a disc, but nothing would happen. One day, my wife pryed a stuck tape out of the head unit with a screwdriver, and the CD changer suddenly started working again! This lasted about 7 months, and now the same "error" code comes up again. Any informed thoughts as to why the problem and what the best (i.e. cheapest) fix is? |
