Anyone ever pulled the govenor valve out and cleaned it? Is this something that is easily done or should it go to a trans shop? Can I get to it by pulling the pan or do I have to drop the trans? what did you clean it with? One piece or hundreds of little ones? TIA Steve H |

I always wonder what the governor does in the transmission. Can someone explain to me please? And can you tell me why you need to clean the governor? Thanks. |

The governer can be done in the car by removing the transfer box and rear transmission housing. I have had very little luck with cleaning them. considering the work involved, I would just replace it and the seals. The governer is a major factor in the upshifts for the transmission. And cleaning is not generally needed if the service's are done regularly. I drain and fill my trans with every oil change. But I'll admit that is a little overkill. But it only takes a few minutes and 5 quarts of fluid. And all ZF Auto transmissions have a governer. Up till 99 when they went with full electronic controls. |
