Anyone ever pulled the govenor valve out and cleaned it? Is this something that is easily done or should it go to a trans shop? Can I get to it by pulling the pan or do I have to drop the trans? what did you clean it with? One piece or hundreds of little ones?

TIA

I always wonder what the governor does in the transmission. Can someone explain to me please? And can you tell me why you need to clean the governor?

Thanks.

The governer can be done in the car by removing the transfer box and rear transmission housing. I have had very little luck with cleaning them. considering the work involved, I would just replace it and the seals. The governer is a major factor in the upshifts for the transmission. And cleaning is not generally needed if the service's are done regularly. I drain and fill my trans with every oil change. But I'll admit that is a little overkill. But it only takes a few minutes and 5 quarts of fluid. And all ZF Auto transmissions have a governer. Up till 99 when they went with full electronic controls.
