I am wondering, in general, if there is a need for a wide range of the larger socket sizes when wrenching on a disco?

I am replacing a broken front axel, and have to buy a 2&1/16 3/4" socket to get the axel lock nuts off. Should I buy a set of large sockets (typically 2&1/16"-up-to-3" sizes are available for around $40-$50)? Or is there really only a couple of times I would need a socket that large, and can get buy with just one or two sizes? Anybody know?

Just wondering - I mean, I can buy the whole set, and a driver/breaker-bar for about a $100.00, or just come away with the one socket I need TODAY, with a cheap driver, for under $30.

BTW - when I called an area dealer to ask what the size of these lock nuts were, the guy actually told me it was a "special size" and that they had to use a "special tool" that land rover supplied.. (grin) whatever....

Thanks,
Mike

I've removoved most of the very large pieces on coilers and I sure wouldn't spend the money. The large 2 1/16 socket you bought is usually pawned off on the factory tool to do it. Look in any of the catalogs and you'll find a "hub nut wrench". The rear axle ball joint requires a 30mm combo wrench. The A-Arms and front radius arms are serviced with wrenches near 1 1/8". The fan clutch is about 1 1/4 or 32mm.

There is very little you can't do on the rover with a full set of metric combo wrenches, a full set of SAE combo wrenches, and a set of 1/2" and 3/8" drive sockets. Add a selection of screwdrivers, a few hammers, snap-ring pliers, multi-tester, and a few other basic tools and you should be set.
