Heads-up: Checking the condition of the alternator and serpentine belt this weekend revealed the idler pulley bearing was on the way out, 'wobbley' and 'coarse' in its rotating action. Removed it today, and took it to the local bearing house. They had it, $4.89 add tax. So for little more than $5.00 and an hour of time it's like new. Quieter running too; hardly noticed the 'noise' before, but now, by contrast, its absense is deafening. Re bearing: "the second most widely used/available bearing in the world...."routine to say the least. He also stated that 90-100k mi is the life of such bearings. LR spec'd it knowing the prospect for field repairs were high and obscure parts are not helpful then. Most idler brgs are mnfgr specific items costing $$$$, as they are seldom servicable. Advantage=LR, at least on this $5 item. This is for all serpentine classics and D-1. Mileage/life applies to all idler brgs in your stable for that matter...cheers- doug 95 lwb @ 99k |

Here's the pn: (MANY mfgr of this size spec) ZKL 62032RSC3 There is a circlip retaining the brg, remove it and drift in the new one, using the old as the drift. Refit circlip. Refit idler housing, then fit serpentine belt. No drill press req'rd. |
