Has anyone had any experience with a solder in powerchip to upgrade GEMS and improve overall engine efficiency and performance? Any feedback or info is appreciated. Thanks Don

Don

Here are some websites that deal with chips

http://www.vanaaken.com/index1.html

http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/unichip/unichip.htm

Safari (as in the snorkel guys) also make a product called the Dtronic, but its just for diesels at this stage.

Here's the powerchip info on the new 2003 disco with the 4.6 engine...is that a good increase for the expense ($490) of the chip?

"Your Land Rover Discovery 4.6 uses a soldered chip. Fitting takes about 1 hour and can be performed by a Powerchip Authorised Fitter, who are available in most areas. The Powerchip is currently in stock and can be delivered by next day courier.

In standard form, the Discovery 4.6 produces 217 hp and 300 lb.-ft.

Powerchip has a range of chips to suit your car, which can increase it's power to between 234 hp and 236 hp, and it's torque to between 321 lb.-ft and 327 lb.-ft.

The price of the Powerchip is USD $490."

Thanks for the responses. More specifically I have a 98 Disco LE with a 4.0 . I have talked to the guys at Smartchip and they do have a chip for my truck what I was hoping for was more real world data instead of marketing. Thanks again for any help. Don

I have an 98 LE and would definitely look into that for a reasonable price. Where do you get info Don? I thought the only thing I could do was put in a k&n air filter (50hp) and cut off the mudflaps for less wind resistance(One second off 0-60), and a few stickers. I'm hoping to one day keep up with my bro's trans am-

I would be interested in putting a chip on my 95 Disco. I like the off road abilities of my truck but I would love it more if it was a bit faster. I am installing a K&N filter and will let you guys know if I see an improvement in performace. I am also thinking about a TornadoFuelSaver since it is suppose to increase HP, any thought on that anyone?

A chip would be nice if it would decrease the flatness of the engine at highway speeds...

The Tornado Fuel Saver is not functional! It is actually a gimmick. I had one as a gift and installed it in 3 minutes, and kept a log for three fill-ups with the same brand/flavor/octane gasoline... absolutely no change in fuel efficiency, horsepower, acceleration and whatever other claims they made. I work with a guy who placed one in his TRD Tacoma and has reported the same thing... I would vote NO on this one.

What I would like to hear about is the use of a cold air intake... I followed the links that DWEB has and these companies do not offer such for a 96 Disco. data on these?

RPi has chips,so try them.

On the Powerchip website, there is a testamonial page. And they actually have feedback from Rover owners. A couple of the respondees have 4.0 engines. They say the power is noticeable in the mid-range - around 3000 rpm and up.
On my '90 3.9, I only get up there if I'm passing or on a freeway in the mountains. That would work for me.

Anyone have an RPi chip installed?

Ryan-

I agree that the Tornado Fuel Saver is worthless. Some of my worthless friends gave me one a while back, and with nothing better to do, I installed it.

I ran it for one year recording the mileage at each fillup. Then I took it out. That was about five months ago, and the mileage hasn't gotten better or worse.

In fact the only thing I found that improved the mileage for me, was to take a trip to somewhere over a hundred miles away. Then I get about a 2.0 MPG increase from my normal go-to-the-store mountain driving, and city driving around San Jose.

The next fun test is going to be one of those magnets you put around the fuel line. The same friends gave me one of those at the same time, but I didn't want to contaminate my "scientific" data.

I just looked at powerchip's website and they only have the 4.0 listed for a 96 range rover. Mine is a 96 discovery - would the chips be the same?

Also, would rechipping take care of the rich burning common with bigger tires?

thanks,

jeff

jeff, I contacted Powerchip directly and found they do have a chip(actually 3 chips)for the disco 4.0 it's just not listed due to split years of 3.9/4.0. I'm currently working to contact some of their 4.0 converts for the straight skinny not just marketing testimonial poop.will get back when more info is in hand. Also if I go through with this upgrade I'll update all with real world results over time and miles on and off road. and yes depending on the parameters you request it can address rich burning. Thanks ,Don

Hey guys I just intalled a K&N filter and the change is noticeable, it's not that much but at least an increase of 5 hp. For a part that I had to change anyway its a good thing. I'll let you guys know if I have any negative problems like higher gas milage or dirtier engine!!!

The K&N did make a big differance when I replaced my old powersteering fluid soaked (busted a hose)nasty/dirty OEM air filter. I also pulled the little megaphone thing out of the airbox which increased the airflow a little more. I'm sure a snorkel would be even better but don't really wanna cut my fenders considering the snorkel is nearly useless unless you seal the ECU.

As for the Tornado, its complete BS. I've watched there infomercials a million times and it used to make me laugh, now it pisses me off that they are making money by ripping people of. I wish a real person (not just a paid shop teacher from an auto mechanic college) would test it on a dyno. I challenge anyone to prove to me it works and I'll put alot of money down against it.

Here's another one to ponder:
http://www.electricsupercharger.com/

As for the chips, do you think you can have both increased power and fuel efficiency? Gonna have to substitute one for the other. It would be nice if they had a remote dash control for power, wait they do....it's called the Air Conditioner.
