Yesturday, while offroading I took some mud in the air filter, (enough to cause the car to stall). (Luckly no water or mud in engine). When I took the air filter off the car ran alright, (about as good as a car will run without an airfilter.) I drove about 10 miles (without airfilter) to nearest parts store to get new filter. Used rag as make shift air filter. I then took off the hose that connects the air filter to the engine to check to make sure no mud or water got in, (there was no water in it.) Basicly, to make a long story short, after hooking everything up and put the new air filter in my amber service engine light just came on. (This never came on when car ran with no air filter. Any ideas what the problem could be? (Also car runs very well with everything hooked up and I have driven it about 150 miles since this happened.)

Also what is the little plasic container on the hose that conncets to the air filter? What does it do?

Anyone other than me have this happen to them? Any problems occur because of this?

If the check engine light is on, take it to autozone and have them check the code, something may be disconnected or something. Double check that you didnt knock off a multi-plug connector near the airbox or anything.

Did you reconnect the two sensors? That little thing you refer to may be the MAF sensor.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery? When a Rover senses a problem, the check engine light will come on. If you have fixed everything, try leaving the negative side unhooked for about a minute. After hooking it back up, if the problem has been fixed, the light will be off. If there is something else, though, it will come back on.

Zach,

FYI: Carl's 2001 has OBD2 and it keeps the codes in memory even after pulling the battery. On OBD1 you can pull the battery and clear the codes.

The check engine light come on after I hooked everything up. Did not come on while driving with out air filter or stalling with mud in air filter. I drove from Albany, ny back to DC with out any problems (almost 800 miles since filter change), just that stupid light. I will try to reset the alarm, (I though I only had to disconnect the one terminal.) If that does not work it looks like I am going to auto zone tonight.

It sounds like the MAS. Hopefully it's not damaged, but if you are going into the dealer and are under warranty, then clean all the mud off that you can, and don't tell them you were off-roading, if its the MAS you will want it replaced under warranty trust me.

Keep you old filter and clean it out as good as you can. next time you go off-roading, swap the old filter back in, then after you finish, swap them back again and once again clean the dirty filter. This means you always have a spare when off-roading. You might also want to consider a snorkel. Maybe Paul Morgan will tell you his saga on this?

"Maybe Paul Morgan will tell you his saga on this?"

There is a long story about my air cleaner woes that started with the installation of a K&N and wheeling in very dusty conditions (April 02). When Ron and the boys at Main Line pulled my MAF (October 02): I am sure you could have ran a geological sample of the dirt and mud to see where I have been. I was getting the check engine light prior to the water ingestion which occurred at the ever so famous Pine Barrens.

Here's what you should do if you are not going to a dealer:

#1 Run codes. I am sure you will see something referring you to Engine Misfire.

#2 You are in good shape if the car is still running with the MAF hooked up. However, I am not sure how anal the Engine Management system is as far as signal from the MAF. Meaning, it could be throwing a light. A shorted out MAF will not allow the engine to run if connected. But if you disconnect the shorted MAF, the engine will run; erratically at idle, but will run. Go figure...

#3 TPS, also known as the Throttle Position Sensor might be contaminated. The Throttle body (Gate valve) should be cleaned out.

#4 Change the oil. Repeat after me Carl, "Change the Oil"

I went to the Dealer for my solution. Parting words from the Warranty Manager was " Paul, go to the Land Rover Driving school and learn about bow waves."

A snorkel for a D2? Yeah I have thought about it. But the weak point is the air-box connection at the DS fender wall. The connection is lined with a foam like material and is held on by plastic hardware. So if you are going to go with a snorkel, I recommend sealing that connection and replacing the hardware with something less suceptible to vibration.

The problem was the MAS. I must have damaged it taking the hose off. No big deal.

Paul, You are right about the D2 air-box, It is pretty weak. I was surprised about the plastic screws and foam.

Ah, BOW WAVES! I got an A+ on my bow wave at the LR dealer event we went to last year. I really concentrated on that exercise because I didn't want to be the chick who stalled the Disco in the water. Fun stuff, even if it WAS in a tank (G). So, in an aquarium I do great, in the real water world.....I dunno, never waded that deep. You guys have seriously rubbed off on me though. The other day I had hay delivered and the hay truck was VERY muddy. They'd gotten stuck in a hay field the day before. I looked at the hay truck, and over at my Disco, only wearing mild road grime, and I felt guilty. I'll try to do better.
