Well this weekend i had a little incident with my rear bumper and a telephone pole. (yes i was sober...just in a hurry and not paying attention) Crunched my rear bumper a bit and will be looking to upgrade now. Before Dweb went down a while ago there was someone on this board that made their own rear bumper. As I remember he had his own lift in his driveway as well. (must be nice!) The rear bumper also had round rear tail lights.
I am going to a local welder/fabricator today at lunch to see what their abilities are. I am not looking to copy that rear bumper. I am looking to do something a little more basic, while keeping my rear hitch in its original place.
But if anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear any or see any pics of what works well.
Again I am not looking to create some masterpiece. Just something that is stronger and works better than our existing setup. I guess just about anything is better. And lastly I just am not willing to fork out 1K for a rear bumper from Trek and other outfitters.

TIA

Garret, I made my own rear bumper for my DI, but I think you are also talking about one of Greg ? DII bumpers with the round lights added afterwards.

Even if you keep it simple, make sure it is secured well to the frame.

Marty also made his own bumpers

actually your bumper was the one i was thinking of. i do remember the one with round lights too.
that is a pretty nice setup you have. i doubt that my local boys here will be able to compete with that. well ya never know......maybe. but that is a very nice bumper.
thanks for the link.

Garret, I'm sure you and your local boys can easily compete. Someone who knows what they are doing and has more equipment should be able to make something similar that is lighter and maybe stronger. And for the record, that lift is not in my back yard but belongs to a mechanic down the road :(

I think it was Greg Davis who was making the DII bumpers. Take a look at his design, as I think he was doing a simple blade design. Might be the way for you to go.

You can email me if you have any questions. Best of luck.

well my truck goes into the shop next monday/tuesday. i think the one thing that i will not change is the location of the hitch. i kinda like it the way it is and i think it will just end up causing more $ and confusion for the fabricator guys. i would like to keep the tail lights, but my only concern for that is it may create a weak point in the bumper (cutouts). and i was looking at the rockware rear bumper and like the one tube that comes straight off the bumper. i like this idea, since currently the first thing you hit, either a tree/car/large cat/etc. is the rear tire. and we all know what happens when that hits something. so having a little extra protection there would be nice. now the only thing about that is still being able to use the hitch. that tubular bar may just come out too far. well i will be doing some drawings this evening and see what i come up with.
i would also love to have a nice skid in the back worked into this bumper. but it just means more $ i guess. just have to see how much i can get them to do within my budget.

thanks

Garret, although I like the end results, it was a hassle to cut and relocate the hitch and I'm sure I ended up with something far weaker than the original. In your case, keeping the hitch is a good idea. My only suggestion here is that when you design your bumper have them fabricate it so that at a later date, when you can afford it, you can add a skid plate. It only requires a simple strap of metal that can be drilled to accomodate bolts. The rear plate might be the most important piece of protection under the Disco.

I have no idea regarding the lights.

Awesome documentation Garrett. Will that skid plate design work for a stock rear bumber? Does anyone know of any plans for making a rear skid plate?

Niel,

Jeff penrose has a rear skidplate that works on the DI and attaches to a stock truck with the receiver hitch.

Jeff, you out there?
