Hi gang, I just bought a 96 Disco about 2 months ago and I am having a problem. The truck has 54k miles and is an automatic. The problem is when I am driving up long inclines, the car loses power. Its hard to describe what is happening but it seems like even if I give it full gas it won't go any faster. There is also a vibration like it is running ruff at that rpm and gearing. Eventualy it slows down so much that I have to pull over. Oil and AT fluid are full and I use super gasoline. My mileage driving around town has been 11.5. Could it be O2 sensors? I hope it is not the transmision. Maybe the Trans filter needs to be changed? Please help!!! |

Your fuel consumption is up due to low power. Have to start at the beginning. That series/yrs of 3.9L D1 has valve stem-carbon fouling as the dominant mech problem. Have the compression tested. You can do this yourself w/ compression gauge. Until you have that checked, it's too soon to explore the other areas of likely issues. The foreign engine shop builder locally in Seattle here does the work for the 3 LR stores in the state- "we always have 4 or so sets of heads in the shop, fixin' the valve problems of 95-96 3.9L".....fyi |

I would replace the speed sensor first. It's about $50 bucks or so and can be installed in 10 minutes. What happens is that the speed sensor will send a false reading to the eng computer telling it that you are going about 120mph, so the computer resonds by shutting off the Injectors. To keep from over reving the Eng. It will not usually set any codes in the computer. And the symptoms that you described fit the profile very well. |

Fixing 95-96 3.9l ??? FYI 1996 is first year of 4.0 liter GEMS motor 1995 and 1996 are very different animals it is 1996-1997 4.0 that have the problem. I have never even heard of a non GEMS motor suffering the carbon on the valve stems problem. I posted an alternate solution that Rover dealers and shops don't like to discuss but works great, do a search for "considering a valve job". |

Brian, does your tranny shift down when you go uphill and start loosing power? You mentioned it just slows down and get rough and then you have to pull over. Maybe your kickdown is not operating. Next time out, try shifting the tranny manually and see if you can sustain the speed or if loss of speed dramatically lessens. If that's not it, start looking at the options others mentioned. |

I had a 1996 Disco with this same exact problem. What I did to resolve it was to change my fuel filter which significantly aided the problem. I also recall it getting worse the lower the fuel level. I ended up rolling it in Moab so it's no longer around, but I also believe that the problem can be/may have been related to issues with the fuel pump or sender. Consider changing your fuel filter and monitor the system closely. If it still continues to occur, consider having the fuel pump checked out. By chance do you hear a buzzing or humming noise coming from the fuel tank or rear of the truck when the fuel level gets lower? jpipes |
