Just bought a D2. The dealer attempted to explain the use of manual and sport mode. I understand the purpose and function of the sport mode. What I don't get is the manual mode.

Anyone care to explain the purpose of the MANUAL mode?

manual mode is just for low range. when you are in manual mode and the gear shift is set to "D" the vehicle start off in second gear, to eliminate the initial kick of first gear in low range. i also heard that manual mode holds the vehicle in the specific gear selected, but it seems to do that with manual mode on or off.

Right. Manual mode is only when in low transfer. However, if you have it in gear 3 and manual is on, it will start out in 1 and then go right to 3 and stay there until you slow to a very low speed.

So basically you saying: when you put it in MANUAL mode the transmission will AUTOMATICALLY bypass 1st gear if you have the shifter in "Drive".

That's odd, I see nothing MANUAL about that.

From the way it was explained to me, when in Manual mode, the vehicle will start off in whichever gear is selected. It equates to being in a manually shifted vehicle and starting off in 2nd or 3rd gear to prevent wheelspin.

No, I'm getting this right from the shop manual. In Manual Mode (low xfer only), it always starts in 1st, then shifts immediately to the gear you have selected (say 3rd or D) skipping those in between and kickdown is disabled and it will not downshift unless the engine is at imminent stall.

Go try it, it's pretty cool.

Wait a minute. To engage the Manual Mode, you must have the transfer case in low gear, and you must hit the Mode button on the tranny selector. The M-ring icon will illuminate on the dash. From there, use the gear selector to select which gear you want to use. IT WILL ONLY USE THAT GEAR, no matter what. It's perfect when you need lots of torgue but little wheel spin. The owners manual doesn't do a good job explaining. Hope this helps.

yes, I now like using the manual mode more often when I'm in low range.

Thanks Michael.

I will try it. I still can't figure out the purpose of this though. When I feel the need to put my rover in low, I've never had it in "drive". Maybe I'm just missing out on the rover's secret squirrel capabilities.

Thanks

Brian:
The purpose is as Jeff stated above...torque. If you're in a tricky spot, needing max torque to get moving, go to Manual Mode, put in 3, and slowly take off. You'll notice a very quick shift as it goes from 1 directly to 3 and then it'll stay in 3 until one of the following occurs:

- you shift out of 3 yourself
- the engine approachs a stall (harder to do than you might think)
- you "click" out of Manual Mode

BTW, Jeff is right, the owners manual really doesn't explain this, but the shop manual lays it out quite nicely.
