I have a 98 Disco that I just purchased used with a wierd problem. If I turn on the rear wiper, it's great. Works beautifully. If I turn it off, it continues to run and I hear a ticking sound coming from under the dash. At one point I had to pull the fuse or it would run forever. It sounds like a bad relay but I just got the Service manual and can find no relay shown in the wiring diagram. I just recently found out how to turn it off without pullng the fuse. As I finally got around to testing it, it did the same thing but when I went to open the door to see where the ticking was coming from, it turned off. I could consistantly turn off the wiper motor and stop the ticking by opening the driver door. What I found was the following in the wiring of the rear wiper motor switch. There are two wires spliced together on two of the four wires going to the switch. There is a green wire that is not connected to anything. This is strange but works for a short time (turning the rear wiper on/off) then will not turn off. Does anyone have any clues what might be the problem? Thanks, Santo 98 LSE |

I see a rear wiper relay behind the left hand footwell trim panel. Is that it? Thanks for the suggestion. It sounds like it might be it. Thanks, Santo |

relay is almost definately the problem - sometimes the copper arms break, and then they flap around and do all sorts of weird sh1t |

I just took everything apart and it's definitely the relay. That's where the ticking sound is coming from. I opened up the relay and it looked like new inside. I cleaned the contacts (even though it didn't look like it needed it) and replaced it but it still does the same thing. Is there another relay in the car that's similar so I could try it in it's place as a test? Is this relay an expensive Rover only part or is it widely available? Thanks for the help, Santo 98 Disco LSE |

Most of the relays are green or yellow, just swap with a like color relay, they are all the same. |
