This is probably a stupid question to some of you, but could someone please let me know how my 98 disco sound system is set up. It all started when I decided to install a after market cd player. I found not one bundle of wires but three sets of wires, where in the hell do they all go. So instead of cutting them all I decided to call up some of my local stereo shops to ask what I should do. Of course they said bring it in and we'll fix everything. But one guy told me that they made a special wire adapter so I won't have to cut any wires, just in case I decide to put the factory back in. I called my local LR dealer and the lady didn't even know what a HEAD UNIT WAS!!!! So after explaining that to her she said let me check ofcourse I got the answer I expected no there is not one. Anyway to make a long story long would some one please help me out.

Thanks a million
G.Lott

P.S. The speakers in the back door do not work anyone got any ideas I heard there is a AMP but I dunno it's not in my owner manual and I'm sure as s*** the lady at LR dosen't know what an AMP is! Thanks guys

I have a similar issue with my 96 I wanted to change radios however the person before me cut off the factory plug so I have the bundels of wires loose, so let me tell you I am really confused. I hope someone has the answer to both of our problems.
Lost in the wires,
Tyler

Hi Guys!
You shouldn't have to many hassles doing your wiring/install. If you have a new head unit and/or CD player it will come with a wiring diagram which will explain which wire goes where, what you will need to get is a wiring diagram for your current unit. The amp is built into the speakers in your back door. If they are not working you probably have a loose wire or if it only recently stopped working you have disconnected it during your CD install.

Gents

AS for the stereo upgrade a wiring harness that adapts the new head to the original harness is the simplest way to do the upgrade.

As for the cut wires. Got a multimeter, because youre gonna need it.

Finding ground, one dmm(multimeter) lead to the body and the other tests all the wires in the bundle. Fun.

Next permanent 12V. one wire of dmm to ground. make sure the ignition is off and test all wires to find 12v source.

next ignition 12v. one wire to ground and turn ignition on. test all wires to find ignition 12v.

those are the three main power connectors. it gets trickier if you want to find electric aerial wires and the like.

as for speaker wires. more testing or rewire them from scratch.

The big Idea guys is if you have a CD changer forget about interfacing with it. Also forget about using the extra controls on the Dash too! Ask your self if you want to use these Items or not. I put an aftermarket CD player in for a killer sound system. I had to find all the power wires like Ian said then the big part is using pre amp outputs to feed the factory amp. You dont even use the "New" CD players speaker output connections. The best Idea would be to get the full Service manual if youve never put CD Players in before. The wire colors don't even come close to american color sceems so be carful.
|I have a 98 disco SE7, and if you want me to pull it out of the Dash to take a digital pic I might be perswaded to do that so I could explain every wire I connected, but see how you make out first.

A VW Golf adapter/harness plugs into those three adapters but the colors of the wires do not match. I carefully pulled the wires that were not used or wrong out of the adapter and put them in the correct place.

Here's the Haynes manual wiring diagram (I don't think all the colors are correct on it either though):

...I just used a test light to find what I needed.
