So the nice weather has finally come and I opened the sunroofs for the first time while driving on the freeway. I think I've lost 50% of my hearing. Is there anything I can do to cut the noise? Besides the obvious closing of sunroof :-(. I have a 98 DI
TIA
Patrick

You think it's bad now. Ride with someone who has the high profile adventure roof rack with the sunroof open and see how your hearing is afterwards.

You could wear ear-plugs or turn the stereo up.

Nice shiny diamond plate fairing, cut and bent to match the factory roof rails...

I agree with Alan...turn up the volume. I went out and bought a high power Alpine head unit. I have a 98 D1 as well and it works like a charm. But seriously, I bought a couple of wind deflectors from a dealership in Houston, Texas and they work really well. I'll try to get that web address for you.

Patrick -

I think that it is just a matter of scale. The Disco is usually very quiet with all the windows shut, that the A/C fan can sound distracting. There will certainly be more noise with the roof or any other window open, you get used to it.

I have a D1 with an adventure rack and 4 Hellas on top. There really doesn't seem to be an unwarrented amount of wind noise, even on the freeway. You may want to try the deflectors mentioned above.

Just be thankful that you didn't buy a ragtop D-90. ;-)

Are the cross-bars in place on your roof rack?

If you have the cross-bars in on your factory roof-rack the noise is deafening but if you take them out and crack the back windows a little, it really quiets it down and makes it somewhat bearable.

How do you get the cross bars out? My disco (96) has some sort of locking bolts. I have looked at owners manual, no help. I'm sure that they are to keep someone from stealing them. There is such a demand for them on the black market.
Those and the stero that you have to just call the dealer to get the code for to make the damn thing work.

I'd guess that your '96 would be the same as my '94 but I could be wrong, on the bottom of the cross-bars (at each end) is a little square that, presumably, you could slide in with your thumb to release but mine definitely require the use of a screw driver to get them to go.

Buy an adventure roof rack you'll hardly notice the sunroof noise, then get super swampers to drown out the sunroof and roof rack which in turn will help will the drivetrain clunk and wine..... welcome to the Land Rover experience. It is part of the character it isnt an MDX !!!

Well, unfortunately, I do turn the stereo vol all the way, but the stock stereo is a tad too weak (I already replace the POS stock speakers). Further more, I found it much quieter with my head OUTside the sunroof than ridding with it in :-)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll try removing the cross bars and see how it goes.
Thanks again

I just snapped some photos of my '94 D1, sounds like LR may have made a change and your's is different. To remove my crossbars I only have to slide the 'button' on the bottom in toward the center of the vehicle.
I'm getting a file size error when trying to post the photos, shoot me an email and I can send them to you, jim@hemauer.com

Jim H, good call on the cross bar. I removed just the front bar and it made a world of difference.
Thanks
Patrick
