I am thinking about the truetrak locker for my 98le, wondering about the pros and cons, about the on road character of the locker, like noise or other issues.

Truetrac is going to be "transparent" - some poeple notice stiffer steering but better tracking on road - but that's because it's a limited slip not a locker.

True statement by Milan...very transparent, steering a little stiffer but really not noticable until you get out on a trail...it does "crab" a little more in deep snow, haven't really had out in the whale shit yet, that's tomorrow. By the way, I have a 2001 sd with truetrac's front and rear, plus grb 4:11's...will be posting more

Oh yeah. I was talking more specifically about the front TT. TT in the rear should be almost unnoticeable except for that extra traction in low-traction situations.

sounds like you have some cool setup there. I also like TT front and DL rear that many people here have but can't make up my mind. If onle Electrac would come out. Then it would be easy - ET front and ET rear.

I debated the detroit rear, I had to compromise a lttle because of the daily driver thing. However, I'm really curious to see how it handles in mud. The brief encounter I've had proved that even with cdl locked, and the trutrac's, everything moves, but if your tires are clogged (bfg mta's) your still not going anywhere...jury's still out...

Buried mine in a creek bottom the weekend before last. You are absolutely correct about the tires being clogged. When the bottom turned into clay buried under a few feet of water/mud the BFG's couldn't clean, it was over. TT and DL made no difference.

The on road difference I noticed with my lockers is that when you are going around a slow corner and let off the gas the truck wants to serge to the curve. I guess it's because when your on the gas the TT's natural tendencies are to make the truck go straight.

Not to pile on here, but I saw a BFG MTA pretty much suck ass last weekend. The guy in the lifted S-10 in the oh-so-controversial Little Rubicon pics actually blew out a sidewall on those rocks. They were new tires. Maybe it is just a bad example of a defect, but there is nothing that day that should have stressed any tire to the point of breakage.

On the topic of the TT, I have the Detroit Rear, TT Front. The TT in the front does make the steering noticeably heavier, but I am pleased as punch with it's off-road performance.

Frank, I'll be going with a TT front and Detroit rear later this summer. Did the TT help your "wander" going down the road? I've heard that it helps restore the feel that is lost when you lift, since you lose your castor. With my current lift, it wanders all over the road. If there's a cross-wind or crown in the road you really have to pay attention.

Greg, you have the castor corrected links and such, correct? I think we have pretty much the same lift, and the wander for me was the same with or without the TT when I had on the skinny swampers. With the wider swampers, the wander is much less apparent and the feeling of overall stability is much greater.

Also, on a semi-related topic, sometimes, my trailing link and/or radius arm bolts loosen up a litte on one side, and then the truck starts to pull or wander. I have noticed if I don't have everything tightened pretty much the exact same, there is a lot more wandering.

Thanks Tom. No, I don't have corrected arms. I wanted to see how much difference the TT makes before I do that. I am also making a dropped drag link soon to get rid of some bump steer that I have. I will also make a mount to raise my panhard (axle end) up 3" to get my axle centered and to keep it parallel with the drag link. Just trying to get that tight steering feel back. With my 285's hopefully the TT will help some.

Well, it's heavier (tighter), that's for sure. Hopefully it will do the trick for you. Good approach to try the TT first and save $$$ on the radius arms if you can.
