I am currently in the middle of doing it myself on my 2000 DII. It is simple and you don't need to do it all at once. I just changed my plugs and oil--this weekend I am doing the tranny and transfer case, then the serpentine belt, flush radiator and brakes...ect. Better way to know your car. If you have a particular concern, either ask or have a shop take care of that one thing.

Agreed, I'm just about finished with my 60k service and it's not that hard and the experience gained is priceless for getting to know your Rover.

A quick run down of everything you should consider checking/changing:

-change oil
-replace oil filter
-replace fuel filter
-replace air filter
-check and replace belts as needed
-check and replace hoses as needed
-change transmission fluid
-change transfer case fluid
-change front and rear diff fliud
-check and grease the driveline
-check and replace spark plugs as needed
-check and replace HT Leads as needed
-check and replace distributer cap as needed

You should also consider checking the brake fluid in the system, certain filters related to the emission control system, and changing the swivel ball fluid.

Mind you, I don't believe all of the above items are done for you with the typical 60k service. Best to check with your dealer first.

Thanks, I think I will give the DIY routine a shot. Where is the best place (on-line or otherwise) to get parts for the maint? Lee

Hey Lee.

I'm completely unmechanical, but I decided to forgo paying the dealer for the 60k service (they wanted about $1k in San Jose CA) and do it myself. I bought the parts, asked some stupid questions on this board and bought the manual. Ive done the belts, plugs and wires, now its time to do the fluids, the onlything that looks a bit tricky is the trans filter...but again, this isnt my bag. Alot of it appears to be confidence building because its not all that difficut. That being said, its actualy kind of fun and very rewarding. My fiance actualy treated me with some respect for a few days....fleeting, but you take what you can get!

Anybody local who wants to tutor me, I'll trade beer for knowledge!

I got my parts at rovers north and british pacific, but IIRC, others have recommened some other places (Discount Rovers?).
