I was finally attacking changing my fuel filter tonight, when everything took a turn for the absolute worst. As usual, i had placed the transmission in Diff Lock, Low gear, before jacking the vehicle to access the rear wheel well to replace the filter. after it was all said and done, i backed it up, and attempted to return it to normal, non diff lock, high gear. The little 4WD yellow diff lock warning light wouldn't go off, so i consulted the manual. it sugguested i try backing up a bit, and moving forward to unwind the tranny. did that, no good. so i tried to shift it back into low and then high again (yes, the transmission was in neutral when shifting) and then POOF! There was nothing to choose from on the transfer case! The little knob i use to change from high to low (and diff lock) suddenly moved freely, and can't select any gear. The vehicle is now stuck in permanent neutral. i can select any gear in the auto trans and its stil in neutral (thats where the transfer case is stuck). i removed the console to see if something broke under the shifter, only to find a sealed boot that is riveted on. i looked/felt underneath, and best i can feel, the rod that is attatched to the diff lock / high low shifter goes directly into the transfer case. HAS ANYONE ENCOUNTERED THIS? did i somehow ruin my transfer case? i really cant afford to pay the dealer a ton to fix this... can i drop the transfer case (my brother is a seasoned mechanic, no experience with rovers though) and try to repair? is there maybe a linkage i could have damaged or did i totally crew the pooch somehow? please help!~ im seriously stuck... ! and best part, my key is now stuck in the ignition.... |

Sounds like the selector fork lost it's pin on the transfer case linkage. Look in chapter 41, page 8 of you manual. There parts #17 and 7. |

you can remove the rivited down rubber skirt by drilling out the poprivits , which can easily be replaced . Then do a visual inspection , my guess is something just came loose , check out this link which basically tells you how to fix a stuck CDL , but it will tell you how to get in and trouble shoot your problem . If the link doesn't work scan down the list to a string called " stuck CDL " which is where I took this link from . Trust me it's not that hard to do. Good luck Ken http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/efe4/images/rover/difflock/discodifflock.htm |

I've had the grub screw from the linkage that goes into the top of the transfer case come undone. You can remove a cover from the top of the TC to gain access (can be done under the car) don't forget to loktite grub screw, but check all external linkages first. John D - Oz |

He's talking about the Genuine LR Workshop manual for the Discovery. It contains over 1,000 pages. You can get one from Nathan Crabtree ([email protected]) at www.discountrovers.com. Thanks, Mike B. |

YOU GUYS ARE ALL LIFESAVERS! The link Ken gave was perfect..i cut the underboot on the passenger side and, sure enough, the linkage had come loose. Took 10 minutes to fix! Thanks guys! I was sure the dealer would get me on this one! its great to have a community like this one to turn to in times of trouble. Thanks again! |
