I went to my lccal NTB and they told me that I should only replace my tires with at least H rated tires because of the required side wall stiffness. Is this true? Could I safely use a S or T rated tire?

I suspect that this is true. If You'll take a suggestion, I just put Michelin Crossterrains on our 2000 disco2 and it has made a real difference in the noise and highway ride.

If you get an LT tire, it will have enough sidewall stiffness, especially if you stick with an "E" load rating.... I've never had problems with a "D" rated tire, either.

If you don't go with a LT tire, though, you'll want to stick with one that's at least an H.... trick is, finding something other than the Michelin that has an H rating on a Rover size....

What kind of driving do you do?

i was just in NTB seeing if they could import gourmet michelin tires and the dude went off about the side wall rating on the Range rover prevent rollover , bla bla..

they go totally by the book for liability reasons.

FYI - I have a buddy that needed tires for his dually that wouldn't install / sell him the tires because of the spacers he had on the real duals (running bigger tires). So it took the wheels off the truck and brought them in and they said they'd gladly mount any type of tire he wanted.

The NTB's of the world are just trying to save their own asses. So, if you want tires mounted other than factory specs it might just be easier to bring the wheels in. Just make sure you know what your truck needs to be safe.

My 2-cents.

Chad.

on a D1, 255/70/16 will rub. It's too wide a tire to put on a D1 without trimming. Especially on a stock suspension and especially when the tire is under full compression.

Sam,
The Widest tire you can fit on a stock-sprung D1 is 255/65-16 (same 29" diameter). The Tallest tire you can fit on a stock D1 without trimming is 215/85-16 (about 30.7" diameter). However, these tires are pretty skinny (though wider than stock RR classic tires).

The Biggest tire you can fit on a stock D1 is 245/75-16 (about 30.8" diameter), but you will either have to trim the rear inner fender lip, or (better yet)simply relocate the fender lip outward with a simple metal bracket spacer (see the tech section). I ran these on my stock (fender-trimmed) 95 disco with no problems.
