My 97 is about to turn 100,000 miles. I am going to replace the fuel filter this weekend. I was wondering if anyone uses fuel additives to clean injectors etc.. What brand would you recommend and do they really work or can they damage an engine?

Chevron Techron. Walmart. A can in the fuel around oil changes keeps injectors clean.

I use the sea foam from napa, in the intake to decarbonize, in the oil cause they say so, and in the tank, to clean, i also am near the 100k mark, and use this product about every 15k miles.

I also use Chevron fuel injector cleaner with Techron at every oil change. I have heard great things about Sea Foam. But, I would be a little concerned about using it on an older engine, if it had never been done before. I wouldn't want to stir up old carbon deposits. Sounds like Peter has been using it for some time, but if you did it at the first time at 100K, might really stir up the junk and clog something up!

I had a shop run their fuel injector cleaner system through, whereas they disconnect the fuel lines, and actually run fuel cleaner through, retreiving all the "dirty" fuel as it comes back to the gas tank.

Well, about 2 days after this, it started to run like crap, and I ended up having to pull the injectors. It seems that fuel cleaner they used jarred some rust loose and really clogged up one of my injectors.

But, I think my case is unusual :-)

I used the Lucas oil additive( the one you see in all the stores, with the gears you turn and watch) and the lucas fuel add.
I was impressed with both, it was almost like a magic trick with fuel economy, and engine performance. I will use both of them again.
sea foam i can't seem to find locally(Canada).
Did you say you spray it in your intake? at what point?

I like Lucas top end Lubricant as well, you can get it at most Truck Stops (I prefer Pilot) for around $20 a gallon. You can get the Lucas heavy duty oil stabalizer for $20 a gallon as well.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I think I will try the Techron to start. My engine runs smoothly except for the annoying tap tap tap that it has had since I bought it almost six years ago. I've learned to live with it. Kinda reminds me of a diesel wanna be :-)

Funny I just posted a separate thread (oops) but I hadgreat experience with X1R www.x1r.com in a 4x4 sports car and wondered if anyone had tried it in a Land rover. I have been mulling it over for mine.

When one uses sea foam, and the can (i use the liquid) not the spray, it tells you in the instructions that when you restart the engine it will smell, it does, if it's breezy out and the breeze goes torward your house, close your windows, or do it another day! I first used with about 75k on my 97 disco, and it did run a bit smoother! i now have 93k, no probs at all, origional injectors, fuel pump, and all, i hope now that ive said this, i still have no probs!
Peter.
