Hey guys, I'm new to this forum but have owned a 1996 Disco SE7 for two years and 70,000 miles and love it. I do all the work on it and several other vehicles myself(Airbag systems excluded!)

I found a wrecked 96 Disco and being the tinkerer I am, posed the thought to four of my closest garage friends of making a "bullet proof" Disco. Has anyone out there tried that on a Disco? We figure it would take about three years doing all the work ourselves. I have e-mailed a company in CA that does this to GMC Suburbans to ask if they have ever done this to LR Discos.

This is off the wall and only hypothetical! It would be neat though.

This forum is wonderful and have gotten many money and time saving tips off it! Thanks guys!

Alaways wanted an armoured vehicle. In a city not too far away from me, they use a Defender 110 as a SWAT team response vehicle. I put in to buy it when they sell it!

Why doesn't LR import a Law Enforcement package for people like the US Forest Service, Sheriff departments, Etc? It is a lot better than those old J**ps, period.

But why do YOU NEED an armoured vehicle??? I mean do you really expect anyone will ever shoot at you??? If I was going to dump that much money into a disco it would be to make an awsome trail rig where I would actually be able to use its capabilities. If for some reason it is a common occurance for you to get shot at then I guess it would be cool but otherwise it seems kinda silly. IMHO, FWIW, yada yada.

It isn't hard... Basically you strip the interior, weld in about 1000+lbs of plate steel and reassemble. Sourcing "bullet proof" glass would be difficult though. You'll need to add upgraded brakes and HP mods to handle the extra weight. In the end it probably wouldn't be worth the effort as disco's are slow enough.

I might need it, in suburba it is dangerous out there Carter. Here around the "Golden Ghetto" I might need that. But yea Carter you are right it just seems silly unless you are extremly rich and think people are after you and you like your rover. Thats about the only reason I can think of.

If you do build it, you could probably turn a good profit selling it to one of the gangs in your area. It would put new meaning to drive-by shootings!

You have never rode in one have you? I'm an MP in the National Guard, we have have armored hummers. If you want to know what it is like to drive one, take the sway bars off your disco, put the axles on the frame, let most of the air out of your tires, unhook about four of the spark plug wires, and drain the brake fluid out of the lines.
This = body role that is the same as a battleship, rides like shit, no power, and takes 6 city blocks to stop.
After this and if you still think it is cool then Kevlar it up and drive on!!!

Wouldn't a Halon system in the passanger compartment would kill the passangers along with the fire?

Thanks for the input guys! I believe we might leave the armoured project alone for the time being until we solve the horsepower bit.

However, Maybe a Disco monster truck....

Disco.....Monster......Truck......Now, I think that is a good idea. Got to have a good name for it. Still going to have to do a engine swap, but man that would be cool.

If anyone does a monster truck Disco, don't forget to put a glass bottom in it so you can see if the guy in the F350 or H2 you just flattened was one of your friends.

(no pun intended!)

I always thought it would be a good idea to put a light layer of kevlar inside the doors and inbetween the headliner. It wouldn't be a weight concern, but I think it would help that much more in car accidents where something might puncture through. I wouldn't be as apt to putting on layers of reinforced steel and bulletproof glass, but some minimal addition that doesn't impeed or be intrusive would be nice.
