98 LSE, and I just bought a remote which did not come with the car. Is it possible to reprogram the remote myself? I really don't want to pay the dealer $.80.00 dollars.
TIA

No you cannot program it yourself. You are not actually programing the remote but the Disco.
Where are you located maybe we can find someone who can do it for you cheaper.

Is this programming operation a closely held secret or does it require special equipment? We need to get the directions and have them posted if no special equipment is required.

The procedure is available on alldata and in the shop manual that everyone is too cheap to buy. It takes two people, or some sort of Rube Goldberg contraption for the hood switch. This does not apply after 96, I am told you need the answerbook from 97 onward. You have access to the entire shop manual and service bulletins, etc on alldata. I think I paid $25 for one year and I just checked and the renewal is $15.

Anyway, save that buck for a cup of coffee.

Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked, bonnet switch depressed.
Carry out instructions 3. to 9 within 8 seconds.
1. Switch ignition ON.
2. Switch ignition OFF.
3. Lock doors.
4. Unlock doors.
5. Release bonnet switch.
6. Switch ignition ON.
7. Switch ignition OFF.
If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and LED will light. It is now possible to programme two handsets of correct frequency to vehicle alarm ECU. This must be carried out within Two minutes.

10. Press and hold down button on first handset until dash LED flashes.
11. Repeat instruction 10. for second handset.
12. The LED will extinguish if both handsets have been initialized correctly.

I'm sorry, that should have been testbook, the computer that landrover dealers use to interact with the vehicle's onboard computer systems. AnswerBook is the knowledge base CD-ROM's that Sun Microsystems gives you when you buy software maintenance.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste...
