Hey guys, I'm looking at a Discvery I here. It's a 96' with 95K on it. It's a 5spd w/o the CDL, it's got a syncronizer messed up b/w st and 2nd gear and possibly a carbrator problem. y question is, I'm a college kid who needs to dtch his 4Runner b/c it's too much to keep paying the loan for the next 3 or 4 years. I can get this Rover for 7,000 do you think it's a good deal and possibly a truck I can rely on and be happy with for a few years till I can afford to get back into a 4Runner again, or will it be more trouble than it' worth to someone in my position in life?(Daddy's wallet is nowhere near this euation) Also how much do you think the syncrnizer fiw would be? Thanks in advance.

Discoveries are fuel injected (no carburetor) all had the CDL up til Disco II half-way through '99.

Good luck trying to find parts for the R380 manual transmission. I know they are out there but still seem difficult to obtain. A used R380 usually runs $1500-2k in the US (about twice what a low mileage automatic goes for) and £400.00-500.00 in the UK.

DO NOT DO IT! YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF!

a 96 in that condition is worhth about $1500!
parts for that will kill your cash flow!

i have a 95 disco and paid $4,000 for it. and mine was in like new condition.

if you do it, you will be sorry!

and if you do buy it.. dont write here complaining, becase we told you it is a BAD DEAL.

(i am harder on college kids b/c they can be sooo darned HARD HEADED!)

:p

dude, do u have college loans also?

if you budget your money right, u can use your college loans to pay off your 4runner sooner. it will also be cheaper, and no interest on your loan for 5 years. if you have a job right now.. you can start paying on the college loan at a lower amount than the high interest on the 4runner.. howver..
i would not follow my own advise on this issue..

i am a HUGE dave ramsey fan, and i dont do debt anymore. if i cant pay cash.. i will not buy it! talk to dave 1-800-talk bak 2pm-4pm CST dave can help you get out of your $$ mess and point you to some dealers that he certifies to help folks w/ income issues w/o using credit.

I had a '95 and it was already costing me $$$ at 60000 miles. Not that I didn't just love that truck. It's a weird thing about Land Rovers - they can be nothing but trouble, but you love them anyway. Keep your Toyota until you can afford a later model Discovery. Or buy the Discovery as a project truck and keep the Toyota.

Scott - You're probably not going to like hearing this but you're going to have enough to worry about with school (and student loans) without having to worry about expensive payments on a Toyota or possible costly repairs on an older questionable Disco which the one you're looking at is screaming. I'd suggest ditch the Toyota and buy a beater for the duration of your schooling. Then buy a Disco when you're more financially stable and trust me, you'll be able to find some really good newer soccer-mom models to choose from and modify at your pleasure.

Just my $0.02.
