First, I want to say that this board is somewhat entertaining and very insightful.

I have a 2001 Discovery II and at 33,000 miles all the tires are scalloping or cupping on the inside. The tires are the original Goodyear Wrangler HP 255/55r18. I set the PSI at 36 (front) and 40 (rear). I've had a front end alignment and Discount Tires has balanced them twice in a 2-month period.

I've read and heard that Goodyear Tires and certain tread designs are known for these results. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Gerry

Gerry, 33K is getting near the end for those Goodyears. we got nearly 45k on our 255 65 16, but they were badly scalloped, noisy and just generally wasted. Replaced them with the Michelin Crossterrain, nice and quiet, smooth although not as aggresive looking, Goodyears blow!

better shocks and slightly higher tire pressure will make a big difference.

but once uneven tire wear starts the effect it has only causes more uneven wear

toss them and start over

What does "scalloped" mean? I've not heard of this before.

Gerry,

You're probably near the end-of-life for the OEM Goodyears. I doubt it will make you feel better, but many people have reported the same scalloping/cupping issues that you've described. The Tire Rack reviews for the Wrangler HPs are filled with complaints from LR owners.

Your best bet is to start over with new tires. I found that setting the PSI to 34 (front) and 42 (rear) gave decent wear characteristics. It seems like more manufacturers are coming out with tires in the 255/55/18 size, so you do have some options this time around.

Stephen,

It is an uneven wear along the edge of the tire's tread, where it wears more in some spots than others. It is usually indicitive of worn shocks; however, the GY tires that come stock on the newer Discos is known for having the problem when shocks are fine.

FWIW....

I had the same problem with the same tires. Tossed them and got Yokohama Geolander A/T 2's. So far I love them. Very good in the snow and pretty good in mud well ok in the mud anyways.

I had the same thing. Switched to Michelin Crossterrains, and 20K later they are still quiet and happily un-scalloped. :-) Get new tires, your ears will thank you.

Me too....put Michelins on and you will be happy. The Goodyears are soooooooooo bad for this you can see the cupping on other peoples Discos in parking lots.... or even hear them humming down the road. Cannot belive LR STILL persists with this tire as an OEM fitment!!!!

Same here on a 2K DII. After only about 17K miles, the POS GY's were shot. Get Michelin's and never look back. ( And I don't just say that because I work for Michelin! )

Thanks for all the advice. No more Goodyears for me.

Thanks again,

Gerry
