Please excuse me if this has been covered before, because I can't find it.

Didn't I see a "waterproofing" kit for Rovers(Probably for Defenders) adverised somewhere?
I know the ususal stuff you have to do- move the vents higher, raise the intake and exahust, but is there a kit for the ignition? My 96 is electronic.

I have already nearly floated it once when going through the Nantahala River while on a camping trip. Water came up over the hood and and made my Disco start to float away.(Thank goodness I replaced all the door seals only a few months ago!) The only reason I suppose we didn't end up at the bottom of the lake a few miles downstream is because I kept it moving and didn't let water get up high enough to drown out the ignition.

What's the best advice guys? Only rarely does this ever happen to me. My Disco is a daily driver and I want to keep it that way.

Matthew,

on a separate but related issue, how effective were your door seals at keeping water out? Did any water get in on the carpet? If not, were your seals replacement from LR or custom of some sort?

I had just replaced the seals with stock LR seals I bought from the dealership in Atlanta.
(Overpriced- I think AB is carrying them now.?)
They didn't let any water in whatsoever and the water went about six inches up the door. Probabbly because they were brand new. I also added a bead of white silicone around the inside of the seals where they mount on the metal around the door. I think I'll ask the question why British rubber disintegrates?

I don't know of any "water proofing" kit but here's what you could do if you have an on-board air compressor.
Get a tire valve, the type that are fitted to rear spring airbags, I think Firestone sell them (they do in OZ). Drill a hole into your distributor, away from the rotor, and either tap the plastic casing or seal the valve in place with Sikaflex 227 or similar sealant.

Now, when you decide you want to go wading, charging through mud holes, or just washing your engine, just connect the air hose from your compressor to the tire valve, switch it on and,....wulla!

Roland-

The '96 may not have a distibutor.

Mathew-

Next time you want to go boating, you may want to send a sacrificial goat ahead of you. If the goat starts swimming or his horns go under the water is too deep. Don't like the smell of wet goats in your Land Rover? Use your significant other, little sibling, or other "volunteer" to pace ahead of you in the stream. Then in a shallower situation with no current, practice your bow waves.

Matthew: Does your 96 have a distributor? Just wondering.

Nadim: Which part of my post would you like me to repeat? I'm sure your 92 has a distributor.

No, my 96 does not have a distributor. It is electronic. I hope it lasts longer. I really dont know why I'm that concerned because I may never go into water that deep again! I am going to the local J**p customizer to see what suggestions he may have to help me "customize" my vehicle.

It's amazing the looks and remarks you get from the J**p boys when they start looking under your vehicle.

Matthew,
You will never waterproof a v8. Some ideas to reduce water intrusion:
·Snorkel, if you are going deep
·Dielectric grease all of your connections
·Replace the weatherstripping pieces for each door with a single strip
·Plug the bottom of your door drains
·Turn off your AC, keep the inside fan blowing (a little pressure differential at least)
·Cowling kit if you have to submerge over your hood
·Keep that bow-wake in front
Have someone on the other side ready with a strap.

BTW, afterwards, unplug the door drain holes.
