Hey guys, Last year I posted a question about my CV joints, and the fact that I hear a click click click when I drive, and a loud pop when I turn left. Paul told me that it's most likely the CV Joint and it needs to be replaced. Well I was going to take apart the hub and inspect everything, but I had 3 questions. 1) Does anyone know where I can buy the c-clip (retainer clip ?) that holds the cv and the hub assembly together. I'll need these incase it's not the cv and I want to put the old one back on. 2) Since I'm going to be taking the hub apart, anyone have a guideline to follow for what needs to be serviced while I'm there? Repacking bearings, replacing seals, etc. 3) Why does the click-click-click stop when I hit the brakes? Thanks, Jared |

Jared: You can get the c-clips from just about any of the Rover parts houses. I usually buy them in lots of 10, they're cheap... Repack the wheel bearings. Replace the drive flange seals and the hub seals. I prefer the RTC 3511, but some don't. I say replace the hub seal as it is easy to tear it up when pulling the bearings out. When you get into the CV joint, you may find the star is chipped-this is bad. Disregard the apparent discoloration inside the bell, it is a result of the heat-treating. Pack the bell with wheel bearing grease prior to reassembly. If you've been driving on this joint for a year, you're either very lucky, or that ain't it! Empty parking lot, turn in ever-decreasing radius circles. If the clicking becomes louder as the circles become tighter, it is very likely a CV joint. Why does it quit when you hit the brakes-could be it's the brakes rattling against the caliper, rather than a CV joint. |

Hey Paul my 98 DI does the same thing. It just hit 100k. My question is I do not have the tools to perform this service, how expensive would it be to repair? |

All you will need is sockets and snap ring plyers and a hub nut tool. It is a easy job to do and it is lots of money to have done. The snapng noise could also be a tie rod end. |

Paul I should mention, that the Disco has been sitting in the shop for almost 5 months, and I asked the question about 8 months ago. I bought the disco in august 02, and so far I've only put 4000 miles on it. |

Ah yes, now I remember. I trust it is running better now? Noises from front ends can be bushings, shocks, tie rod ends, bad dampener, bearings, etc. Difficult to tell over the internet:-). Brian is right, terrifically expensive to have done, time consuming to do yourself. First time probably took me four hours to tear the front end apart, I've gotten faster! Peace, Paul |

Cost me about $1,400 to replace everything on the left front wheel. I neglected getting it checked out after the knocking started. We were on a trip and about 800 miles from home. It hurt, bad. Brendan 95 Disco |
