I want to move my ECU up and out of harm's (water's) way. Any suggestions? I was considering on the ceiling just before the upward bend...how difficult would this be? Has anyone tried to relocate their ECU? I have a '95 DiscoI.

Quite a while ago I considered the same thing myself. There are two things I would consider important in such a move.

1. The wiring, there may be quite a bit of re-wiring in such a move.

2. Where to relocate. Even under the hood in a hot enviroment the ECU is able to breath and cool its components to within operating temperatures. It would need at least as much ventelation in any new spot.

You consider(ED), meaning you decided not to do it. What did you do instead?

Zach,

So I guess that if you put it on the ceiling you could drive in water deep enough to fill the interior to just below the ceiling and be fine right? Just hold your breath I guess. How deep do you really plan on being? Have you considered just getting a boat instead? Sorry to bust your balls.

It's alright Daniel--if I recall, you don't have any of your own to bust.

On a serious note, though...I want to be safe "just in case." I don't go through deep water often, but I would like to know that my truck is going to work if I do get into a situation that would require me to go through really deep water--headlight depth or so. My seals aren't what you would call perfect, and those will be replaced as well. I just don't like the idea that if I got halfway through a water crossing and stopped for some reason, water would rush up around my ecu.

Good idea Daniel, I'll try that...but if I'm going to be rumbling with the big dogs in the fight club, I wonder if I should use a Pelican case...or maybe UK...

Zach-

Actually the UK line might be worth pursuing. They used to make underwater camera cases, maybe they still do. In the underwater photo category of cases they even have waterproof through case fittings for cables, etc... Ikelight might be another source.

Just a thought.

In answer to your first question to me, I decided to stay out of really deep water. Often water that deep has a current to it, and it doesn't take much to push you into more trouble.
