Hey guys, out of curiosity, how vulnerable is the front/center/rear diffs on the Disco series II to damage when offroading on the trails? Also, are there any other components on the 03 Disco's that are particularly vulnerable to damage? Right now, i'm in the process of lemon lawing my POS Freelander which has spent 66 days out of the 6 months i've owned it in the shop for repairs, not to mention it's going back to the shop again this Thursday for more repairs. My dealer is trying to get Land Rover to voluntarily buy my vehicle back and give me credit, and if that happens, I may be interested in a Disco. If Land Rover refuses to do this, then I simply won't ever look at another Land Rover product ever again. |

I spent the weekend skull-dragging my 02 DII over big sandstone steps with no damage evident yet. Diff guards are relatively inexpensive compared to new diff's. If you can break it, there is more than likely something available to protect it or strengthen it. |

June - sorry to hear about your problems. The diffs are always vulnerable no matter what model of Disco/vehicle you have. If you're worried about that, then get some diff guards but just being careful is probably the first step. |

Thanks..........i've done a bit of offroading with my Freebie, and one thing you never have to worry about is the rear diff. If you look at it, Land Rover did an impressive job designing it as it's completely tucked way up high and out of the way. If a rock managed the clear the skidplate or rocker panels, it will definately clear the rear diff, although you may bend a rear control arm. |

Out of curiosity, would the dealer sell diff and underbody armor, or would I have to buy it from someone else? If what is probably the best company that makes the highest quality underbody armor? |

I think most of the armour type stuff you see for LR are after market things. You can ask the dealerships what they can get for you but I'm pretty sure you could find as good if not better stuff from after market vendors yourself. There's a whole wack of different vendors you can find stuff for. And chances are the items you find will be better becuase they're most likely specialty vendors. Best quality? That's going to vary according from person to person. Ask here and you'll get a bunch of different opinions. Depends on what your criteria is and what you intend to do with your truck. |

For what its worth, I spent last weekend in the mud with my Disco II. There were a few hidden gems that I slipped onto and one I got hung up on. I checked my diff guards yesterday while inspecting the underside and I can honestly say that I think these things paid for themself on this trip alone. There is plenty of evidence as to the beating these things took. While I can't say that the diff would have given out, it certainly looks like the armour did its job. BTW I got mine from Dee at Roverbiz and they are very stout. Cheers Dee. Jay |
