I've had my truck 95-Disco for almost a year now. I've performed a 30K service on the truck. This is my first Rover and I'm curious as to what other types of drive-line maintenance is recommended. I have a copy of the LR service check-list but there isn't anything mentioned.

Does the CV-joint (swivel ball) lube need changing? What about axel grease, and is this different from the diff fluid? (I changed the diff fluid) Any other grease zerks/fittings that should be addressed.

Thanks for the help.

Chad:
At the very least, the oil level in the swivels must be checked periodically to improve the longevity of your CV joints. Yes, you can change the swivel oil. If you dumped the diff fluid, it is not much more involved, but slightly messier. Turn the wheel away from the truck to improve access to the fill port.

Diff fluid is the oil the gears run in. The bearings are packed in grease. Greasing the bearings is somewhat more involved, requiring hub disassembly.

Zerks: Both driveshafts have slip joints and it is critical that these be lubricated regularly. Your universal joints may or may not have zerks-if they do, grease them at every oil change for optimum life.

Peace,
Paul

Where are the slip joints on the drive shafts? And for both the slip joints and the u-joints what are the correct lubes to use?

Thanks.

Chad:
On both driveshafts, nearest the transfer case, there are sliding joints. Look around the circumference and you will find a zerk. Inject grease until the boots begin to swell.

Just about any NLGI number 1 or 2 grease should be fine. I look for the greases intended for doing things like boat trailer bearings as I know my stuff is gonna get wet.

I admit to buying this stuff at Wal-Mart. I can buy a throw-away grease gun and some grease by walking across the street, and don't pay much for it. But, I also recognize that when my throw-away grease gun quits, it is the thirty-year old grease gun that gets broken out to finish the job.

Peace,
Paul

Chad:

It is possible on the sliding joints that Paul refers to that there are plugs (8mm hex?) versus zerks. I've never seen them that way, but the book says that some units come out of the factory that way. If you just happen to have this situation, you just need to replace the plug with a zerk, grease them up as described and off you go.

Anyone know how to lube the U-joints without taking the driveline off? Are there different, smaller zerk heads that will fit in the small spaces of the U-joints?

Corey -

I got under the truck this weekend I've got what look like normal zerks on my u-joints, both front and rear. I plan on picking up some lube this week and refreshing the joints. The zerks looked like standard issue size, I'll let you know if they're not.

To get to all the grease nipples on my D1 drive line, i had to grind a bit of metal off the grease gun fitting so that it is no longer a round end but, round with 2 flats allowing it to fit between the drive yolks!

Chad, I have a 95-Disco as well and I just lubed up my drive-line two months ago. I got the Haynes manual and it told me to get a low pressure grease gun to lub the axles with. I got one at O'Rileys for I think $12.00 grease included. I got under the car and simply cleaned the grease nipples with a brush and pressed the grease gun nozzle into the nipples, pumped grease until it I got a slight run off from the end of the nozzle. There should be a total of eight if I am not mistaken, one on each end of the axles and another ones on the U-joint. I also added fluid to the CV-joint and checked the both Differentials. Car runs better than ever. I did got buy the Diff oil from the dealer just to make sure I had the right stuff.

Tony, I think you are mistaken. The axles do not have zerks. The wheel bearings have to be manually packed with grease.

There should be 2 zerks on each drive shaft (one for the splines on the shaft and one for the ujoint), 1 if you have a rotoflex.

How do I know if I have a "low pressure" grease gun? I know that if you over fill zerks you can rupture seals...

What kind of grease are people using? Regular or Syn?
