What's the story on GBR axle flanges ...

It is my understanding that on my disco I will need to buy the axles complete with flanges. I thought I learned that you just have to remove the plastic center cap from your wheels? Who's been down this road and willing to share? For a couple of reasons, I'm not interested in running steelies so that's not an option.
