How complicated is replacing the oil pump on a 97 Disco???

I was quoted $700 canadian for a replacement oil pump ...is there a cheaper source? Also, I know that the oil pump is integrated on the front plate on the 3.9 but the dealer said that the oil pump on my 4.0 is seperate... is this a easier model to replace the oil pump on?

I am experiancing low oil pressure and it seems to be an intermittent problem. I have already cleaned the oil screen, flushed the motor twice and replace the oil switch... all that is left is the pump....

Ah,

first off the dealer is wrong, you need a new front cover as the oil pump is not servicable seperately on a 4.0. They have got it backwards. 3.9s (non suffix B 3.9s) have a serviceable oil pump, 4.0s do not.

The front cover is expensive, personally I would not mess around with anything but genuine on an oil pump and I am not sure you can even get one aftermarket.

As far as DIY you have to swap front covers, it is pretty complicated so it depends on your skill level. I would also check bearing wear before swapping front covers, you have to pull the oil pan to do the front cover so you can check the bearings on the way in swapping the cover.

Narinder, Ron is right, the 4.0 is integral with the front cover. I recently did this on a 96 4.0 and it was not a simple diy job but was not too bad with the right tools. I got my pump from Atlantic British for about $400. I replaced the waterpump while I was in there as well (another $200). You have to remove the radiator, fan, water pump and drop the oil pan. It took me a full day with a helper and all the right tools to do the job.
